Default Upgrade or fresh install?

On 02/01/2019 17:06, Fokke Nauta wrote:
Hi all,

All best wishes to start with.

My wife's pc is running W7 Pro 64. She likes to have W10 Pro 64 instead
of W7.
I have seen that I can choose between a fresh installation (after
clearing the C: drive) or perform an upgrade from the current OS. I know
a fresh installation is better, but it's a hell of a job installing all
applications again, and create all settings like they are now. What's
the result of an upgrade from 7 to 10? Does it have disadvantages?
I'm curious to your opinions.

Rgs,
Fokke Nauta

Thanks for all your comments and opinions.
I decided to perform an upgrade. First time ever.
It was a piece of cake and I included all updates.
W10 didn't ask for the key! So - was this a free upgrade?
Only one problem: icons are frozen on the desktop. I can't move them.
But that will be sorted out.

Two commands you can try for fun, now that the upgrade is done.

winver

slmgr /dlv

The Winver will start at 17763.1 and later in the day a
Cumulative Update will come in and bring you up to the
December Cumulative for 2018. That could be 17763.451 or
similar. In other words, the number on the end gets
bumped up, every time a Cumulative is installed on
Patch Tuesday. Winver is an easy way to keep track.

For the second command:

"slmgr /dlv (stands for display license information, verbose,
similar to -dli switch but with more detailed information)"

When you see "Initial grace" the product is *not* licensed.

You might try ticking it and then cold booting it and unticking it
again, this sometimes unlatches a stuck process, worth a try.

Good idea.
Did it, but it didn't work. Also uninstalled Fences, which was installed
in W7. Didn't make a difference either. Nasty problem. Perhaps back to a
clean installation?

I got it solved.
Opened an admin prompt.
Typed:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Rebooted and voila, it was OK!
