Can't turn off Synaptic Touch Pad on Laptop. Using usb mouse.

But with windows 10 digital license I gave up. Everything worked fine, and now after years I decided to put in a 256G 2.5" SSD. That works fine too and windows loaded and activated fine. I downloaded the 1809Oct update 64bit. One of my biggest issues is the synaptic touchpad has no provisions in device manager to disable the mouse. Even disable when USB Mouse is plugged in. I've deleted the driver and rebooted and there is still as synaptic mouse, and updating just puts in a better (the old one). Still no joy. Any ideas? Oh, and the camera (webcam) doesn't work. But I've found drivers for it from Sony but that's still not a fix. I even found an update for the motherboard chipset and that didn't change anything. We moved 2 years ago, and I swear I had a box marked VAIO or the original box it came in. Either way, we have no literature or anything from the sale. And no CD's came with it. It was an open box. I also waited too long to try the Sony recovery cd software and it failed to work. So basically it's a perfect storm. Any one thing could put me in a better position. But hell it was only a $299 laptop and it's lasted 6 years and a $75 SSD might give it a few more years. Yes, but we know what this is :-) It's the school of hard knocks :-) Remember that Windows 10 is a "SmartPhone" OS. For a webcam with built-in microphone, you have to *turn on both webcam video and microphone permissions* . My video wouldn't work, until the microphone was turned on. I was sitting there staring at mine for a while, trying to get the Camera App to work. And that was the problem. It still doesn't work right, but it's closer to working than before. The resolution control is shot to hell, and presents random values. Modern cameras are "UVC Class" and an actual OS driver is sufficient to get say 960 resolution to work. For some higher resolutions, vanilla UVC might not be enough. But at least, start with getting *something* to work, by enabling the permissions in the Setup interface. And it won't tell you it's a permission issue either. You have to guess at it. Paul |

The whole idea was to get some speed out of this laptop as it's only an i3 intel processor.Â* 2.4ghz but only i3.Â*Â* I had this spare 250g ssd and a fresh install seemed so simple.Â* Yeh right! I'm now at the logic of just dropping the old one back, and get a larger SSD and just do an clone to the new SSD.Â*Â* It won't clean out the garbage but it will carry over the good garbage ie the mouse. SSDs are cheap and I'm spending too much time. There is another simple solution, and that is just replace your 6 year old computer.Â* You probably spent over $100 for the new disk, and are talking of buying another one. So far you have at least $100 and probably $200 and many hours of research for a solution, plus several many hours installing and reinstalling the OS and programs.Â* What have you got? A 6 year old patched up computer that has a weak part or bad ram that will shortly fail. Every computer that I have ever owned, died.Â* With each, I tried every thing I could think of to fix the problems I was having.Â* With one computer, I was reinstalling the OS and programs every few months, when that no longer worked.Â* With the last, I was run ChkDsk, when I heard an audible "POP". If you go into any big box store, or office supply store you can buy a new computer that will have a faster processor (more cores, newer technology), a 1TB disk and 8GB of ram for less that $500. To me it seem the choice from and the point of economics is obvious. See reply below, but short story is: it's fixed. But your idea has crossed our mind. And you're right. It's six years old, had it's day and I got my money out of it. I will probably start looking for sales etc. Thanks. |

I finally got a nice thread on some site that led me down the right path. I had 2-3 drivers to load, one common shared libraries that evidently Sony uses for ALL software. That and a Control Center that had a 'turn off touchpad' slider button. The Fn+F1 needs to be tested but that's minor. There is also one less "unknown" item in the device manager (only 1 now), so something was needed. And side note, I got all Sony or original manufacturer software. Nothing from these driver-downloads.com or whatever sites. Webcam works but is dark. Could be just my dim living room but we don't use the webcam anyway. Wife can now play and tweak settings to get stuff like the Office products like she had them. But that's her problem :-) Thanks for all the suggestions/comments/moral support. And the idea of a new Laptop! :-) Al |

The touch pad is more convenient when I am doing typing task where my fingers are on the key board. It is easier to move my fingers to the touch pad than to grab the mouse. By typing task I mean writing a long email or in my word processor when I am writing a research report, procedure, long letter, or anything where there is the primary input is the keyboard. -- 2018: The year we learn to play the great game of Euchre |

I was afraid you were going to say that. g As I'm sure you're aware, that doesn't help me understand. I prefer the mouse for games, I don't play games (well, hardly any--occasionally solitaire or chess), so that doesn't mean anything to me. the touchpad for typing (e.g., moving the cursor to an insert/delete point). Also, whatever I used last I tend to use agaian. That part I can understand. I do the same (but what I last used is always the mouse). g But these days, I travel with my smart phone (which I use just for e-mail, the web, Google maps, and Kindle) instead of my laptop, so the option of using a keypad is mostly gone. I suspect many people have the same skewed preference(s). First rule of understanding people: If you can think/imagine/do it, then so can many, many others. That's one reason "intelligence services" are a waste of taxpayers' money. Yes, we all have skewed preferences. And most of us think our preferences are right and everyone else's is wrong. That's why, rather than recommending a particular program to do something, I often suggest that people try several and choose what *they* like best. |

I reloaded this laptop and I didn't like the gray and gray google chrome my wife uses so I changed it to a nice green and pale orange, my personal liking. Now that I've released her on it to tweak, she's complaining about that color. She likes gray and gray shades. Who'd guess?!!! :-) Al |
