Default XP connecting to Win 98

Hi,
Pls. can anyone advice me on the following problem.
I have a Win 98, which is used for Internet and File
sharing etc..
On the 98 I have setup a workgroup (VINNY), and specified
the IP address (192.172.0.1), subnet mask (255.255.255.0)
and DHCP enabled.
I have 4 XP clients for which I'm trying to connect onto
the workgroup. I manage to add the 4 XP's onto the
workgroup but cannot view the 98 PC.
It does mention it has joined the workgroup, but when
running Help and Support on XP. It shows Domain VINNY, and
IP address 169.254.x.x

Any suggestions??

Thank you!!
Amit

You've set a static IP address but enabled DHCP. Try choosing one or the
other but not both as DHCP is a service that allocates IP addresses.
On XP, I think that when you get the 169.x.x.x IP address returned to you
that usually means a PC has tried but hasnt been able to communicate with a
DHCP server.
When you say Domain VINNY, do you "mean" Domain or Workgroup?, check you've
set this correctly.

On the win98 ICS server pc start again! Remove ICS then uninstall
"everything" from network settings include network card drivers, reboot
after deleting all. Restart PC, if plug and play discovers and installs the
card automatically then reboot when its finished. Reinstall NIC (if not auto
done), protocol TCP/IP and client for microsoft networks etc rebooting as
necessary. THEN install ICS server. Dont attempt to set an IP address for
this machine as ICS will become the DHCP server and set the 98 machine's IP
address for you. Set its workgroup to VINNY.

Reset the XP machines to basic network settings and tell them to get their
IP addresses automatically. Run the networking and Internet connection
wizards - you dont need a disk created by the Win98 machine - and you should
be there. Check their workgroup settings
