Default Alternate Configuration

When I use the "Alternate Configuration" in TCP/IP
settings. It doesn't work. I have 2 identical Laptops, it
works on one but not the other. I've installed all the
latest updates. It connects to the network but you can not
browse the web. Please help.

Thanks

Gene,

the idea behind the alternate configuration is that it works
when no DHCP server is found. Therefore you normally shouldn't
have any IP address and no DNS settings in the primary
configuration.

Yes i know. I should have put that in. I'm using the
alternet config for a specific IP address. The main config
is setup for DHCP. One works the other doesn't.

Thanks Again

Gene,

I understand that the alternate configuration with a fixed IP
address does not work on one of your two XP laptops, when
connected to a LAN without DHCP.

Which IP addresses do you use? Are you perfectly sure there is
no DHCP, i.e. no Internet Connection Sharing either?

You could open a command line window, enter the command:

ipconfig /all

and copy and post the output here. Or enter the command:

ipconfig /all C:\ipconfig.txt

Or enter any other path and file name to save the result on
disk, then post it here.
