I don't know why he can't "Create Shortcut" but if he finds it difficult to
make one in the Accessories folder, then try creating them on the desktop
and moving them to the Accessories 'folder' (The Accessories in the 'Start
Menu' corresponds to a folder of the same name on your hard-drive:-
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories). *The
shortcuts that are there by default and their targets are as follows:

Is there a bettter way to regain the utilities in the

Supposing you instal a software , occasionally it selects among
the
already existing area as the slot for the new software
installation.
Is there a way to prevent that, and hence make the software
beinstalled in a slot unique to it say by expanding the all
program
files?

Good installation programs let you select where the code should go.
Bad
programs just drop it somewhere.

The power DVD software did not "displace" existing software. If the
file
names were the same then it probably overwrote it. If they were
different
then you now have the files side by side. What are you actually
missing?

Thanks for your input!
The paint function was gone....

==========

Did you lose the "Paint" shortcut or the underlying executable? I
suspect
you lost the shortcut, which you can easily recreate by pointing it
at
c:\windows\system32\mspaint.exe.- Hide quoted text -

Hmm..yeah,,, that was my nephew concern....thanks for that input, I
will relay that information to him...
Hoping that's only the one that concerns him..
BTW, supposing other listed functionalities in the accesory area was
gone, is there a way to regain that also.
Do I have to follow that C:\windows\system32...... followed by the
function...?- Hide quoted text -

Well he was pleased with it( my nephew) and checked it myself, yes
even if he can go to paint by using
C:\windows\system 32\mspaint.exe but can't get it done by right
clicking and create shortcut which he want to place in the start up
program files accessories directory....
Can somebody explain this thing more....?

I always gulp when posters report things such as "can't get it done".
They
assume that respondents have the wonderful ability to see their screen
and
know precisely *why* it can't be done. Unfortunately this is not so and
my
crystal ball is very cloudy this morning. Need to send it in for a cut
and
polish. In the meantime your nephew might report precisely what happens
when
he tries to create the shortcut.- Hide quoted text -

What he mean is he want to regain the shortcut *for the paint utility
in the accessory directory...
He want to know what to do......

So, are you all fixed up now?

When somebody else logs in, they will have their own Start, Programs,
Accessories folder resembling the one for All Users. Everybody has
their own, but they all start from All Users as the base.

===============

Mmh, not quite. When somebody else logs in then they will get a full *copy*
of the "Default User" profile folder as a base. On top of that they will
*see* every item that is currently stored in the "All Users" profile folder.
This is important to know when building up a standard profile for new users.

Acknolwedged.

I don't think the OP is too worried about building new user profiles.

I know you guys are all fixed up - I was asking him!

This is strange according to that PC
Windows cannot find the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
\Programs\Accessories.
I have checked the spelling and its okay but how come there is a hitch?

Apparently, from this and later messages, you are talking about missing
Start Menu shortcuts.
(See also Jose's 5/18/2009 4:02PDT message)

Did you or your nephew log-on under a different user name?

To locate your Accessories folders:
click Start
click Search
click for Find Files and Folders
(In the left panel, you may have to choose Files and Folders again.)
In the search box, type the word: Accessories
press Enter
In the right panel you should see several folders called Accessories.
A few of the "Accessories" folders on my system a
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories
C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

Links in the All Users...Accessories folder, (like Paint,) can also be
seen on my Start Menu when logged on as Richard. Links ONLY in the
Richard...Accessories folder, (like Richard's Diary,) can NOT be seen by
other users on their Start Menu. Check all your "Accessories" folders -
the missing shortcuts are probably around somewhere.

BTW: (By The Way) System Restore restores the system, not applications
or personal data.
Cheers! --Richard

That windows Xp PC software was installed by one of his friend which

either… grin

So I am relaying this question the experts here,
I don’t have that problem in my current PC so have no idea that such
shortcuts will vanish.....

Another problem that he recognized is if he install a new software ,
it looks for slot in the accessories or other installed programs
instead of creating its own place. That was likely the reason that
when he installed power DVD in the accessories folder the shortcuts
just vanished from that directory....

Now he is reluctant to install more of his software being afraid it
might delete more shortcuts in the program files.
Any more ideas how to sort this out also?

Due to my hectic schedule, I have only time to check recently my
nephew pc and the problem is still there...

I have checked the Accessories here
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs and
the utilities such as
paint, calculator, notepad, command prompt, tour window xp,
synchronize] tour window explorer is gone
there was nothing there!

When I run this address
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"
There was that pop up that says….
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"
Run notification was like this
It refers to a location that is not available….It could be in the hard
drive in this computer or in the network. Check to make sure that the
disk is properly inserted or you have connected t the internet or the
network and try again….f its cannot be located it might have moved to
a different location…

What does this mean……….? Could that be possible that the address given
will just vanish from the designated location…? How can we retrieve
that…?
Is there any quick solution to this...
BTW IIRc somebody recommended to create the shortcuts int he desktop,
would somebody explain it more in detail?
Thanks!

Roy,
the quotes ON BOTH SIDES of the address are ESSENTIAL as there are
spaces in the location address and without them Windows cannot see the whole
address as one thing!

When I pasted and copied the address you gave I got the same thing until I
was that there was only one quotation mark - at the end of the address.

You can quite easily 'navigate' to the folder instead - by opening 'Windows
Explorer' (Windows Key + E) and the opening the folder "Documents and
Settings" and then clicking on the + (plus sign) next to the folder "All
Users" then the same for "Start Menu"....

Actually nephew logged on his own users name and there is not conflict
with anybody as he is the administrator of his own PC.
That windows Xp PC software was installed by one of his friend which
is not around anymore but relocated therefore he has no one to ask for
help but me..which unfortunately not really good on this things
either… grin

So I am relaying this question the experts here,
I don’t have that problem in my current PC so have no idea that such
shortcuts will vanish.....

Another problem that he recognized is if he install a new software ,
it looks for slot in theaccessories or other installed programs
instead of creating its own place. That was likely the reason that
when he installed power DVD in theaccessoriesfolder the shortcuts
just vanished from that directory....

Now he is reluctant to install more of his software being afraid it
might delete more shortcuts in the program files.
Any more ideas how to sort this out also?
Regards
Roy

Due to my hectic schedule, I have only time to check recently my
nephew pc and the problem is still there...

I have checked the Accessories here
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs and
the utilities such as
paint, calculator, notepad, command prompt, tour window xp,
synchronize] tour window explorer is gone
there was nothing there!

When I run this address
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"
There was that pop up that says….
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"
Run notification was like this
It refers to a location that is not available….It could be in the hard
drive in this computer or in the network. Check to make sure that the
disk is properly inserted or you have connected t the internet or the
network and try again….f its cannot be located it might have moved to
a different location…

What does this mean……….? Could that be possible that the address given
will just vanish from the designated location…? How can we retrieve
that…?
Is there any quick solution to this...
BTW IIRc somebody recommended to create the shortcuts int he desktop,
would somebody explain it more in detail?
Thanks!

Well yes...
I checked it ...yes your correct.....sorry.....
Anyway what is really surprising is there is nothing in that area that
tells about the missing utilities....?
Meaning its gone....?
Therefore if its not there , then what is the best way to recreate it?

What I mean in the missing system tools, how can we regain the
Paint, calculator,tour winXp,synchronize, command prompt,
notepad,wordpad...
So, if its already in that folder then I can make a shortcut for the
accessories directory and hence solve my nephews pc problem.

Is there a bettter way to regain the utilities in the Accessories...?
Supposing you instal a software , occasionally it selects among the
already existing area as the slot for the new software installation.
Is there a way to prevent that, and hence make the software
beinstalled in a slot unique to it say by expanding the all program
files?

If they are missing for a user, there is probably a default copy he

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

Take the contents of the above folder and copy all or parts of it to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name Here\Start Menu\Programs
\Accessories

Create the Accessories folder if it is missing for your user.

What you see in Start menus is just stuff in a folder someplace.
Every user has their own copy which is taken from All Users when that
user got created.

You can copy, paste, delete anything you want to see (or not see) from
these folders and then it will instantly change what you are offered
under your Start button options.

This is why you sometimes get asked when installing - do you want this
for all users or just the current user? The program will then put in
in correct folder for all users or/or just the current user.

Like I said in my first reply in this thread: You will just have to be
patient and *create* the missing shortcuts yourself - one by one.

Here are the locations (targets) of the link files (shortcuts) that are in
the Accessories folder by default. As I said, recreate them - one by one -
just work your way down the list.
Having made a new folder (if the folder does not exist) called "Accessories"

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

........

Accessories Shortcuts
---------------------

LinkName: Address Book.lnk
Target: C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\wab.exe

LinkName: Calculator.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\calc.exe

LinkName: Command Prompt.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe

LinkName: Notepad.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe

LinkName: Paint.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspaint.exe

LinkName: Remote Desktop Connection.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstsc.exe

LinkName: Synchronize.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mobsync.exe

LinkName: Tour Windows XP.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\tourstart.exe

LinkName: Windows Explorer.lnk
Target: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

LinkName: WordPad.lnk
Target: C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe

.....once the shortcuts have been created in the folder named above, they
will then be part of the 'Start Menu' under the folder of the same name
(Accessories).

Thanks for your reply...but I checked that folder and the files are
missing there also....

There are four folders
with the corresponding contents:

Accessibility accessibility wizard;

Communicationhyperterminal,network connections, network setup
wizard, new connection wizard, wirelessnetwork setup wizard

Entertainment sound recorder and volume control

System Tools Activate windows, backup, character map, disk
defragmenter, scheduled task, system restore, disk cleanup, files and
setting transfer wizard, system information.

This is really surprising.........and perplexing...

Sorry but this sound hazy to me....I tried it when I recreated it, it
was possible there is no way to save this on a folder.
Or I did I miss something.......?
