With kind regards From WillofAustralia You can check some benchmarks here. A Caviar Green with 16MB cache happens to be compared to a Cavier Green with 32MB cache. The average transfer rate is a little bit higher for the unit with the larger cache. Smaller files may benefit more than large files. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/sto..._17.html#sect0 If you wanted better performance, changing brands is probably the fastest way to get that performance. While a few percentage points boost caused by a bigger cache is nice, the "technological leapfrog" played by the companies is an easier way to find a faster design. If you find the latest technology, it might have a higher sustained transfer rate where the head meets the platter for example. If all you need is mass storage, most people don't care if a few percentage points difference exists between the drives. When buying 1TB drives, many potential customers are looking at "dollars per gigabyte" as their metric. That, and hoping the drive doesn't die the day they take delivery. (Read the reviews on Newegg, to see what the product quality is like.) Don't forget your backup strategy... Any mistakes or accidents at the 1TB capacity point, means a *lot* of lost data. And these drives die like any other. Paul |

It is the amount of ram contained in the harddrive to buffer reads and
writes to the comparatively slow rotating mechanical apparatus, in this case bigger is better. OnlyMe wrote: HI can anyone please explain the difference between 8mb cache and 32mb cache. I myself would always go for the one with the higher cache even if it means
a few more dollars. "OnlyMe" wrote in message ... HI can anyone please explain the difference between 8mb cache and 32mb cache. I have the chance to pick-up a WD green 1 TB HDD with 8mb cache for $119.00 AU. With kind regards From WillofAustralia |
