Default laptop power problem

I recently put on my laptop and when it booted up ok the screen was dull as
if the battery was low but the icon said it was charging. It remained at 2%
and never rose up to full charge. When I take it off mains power the screen
brightens up like it was fully charged but i get a message saing i should
switch to mains outlet as the power was low. Any body any ideas what is going
wrong. I tried another power adaptor but still the same result.

We weren't able to wave or hands and make the power problem go away?

I can sort of understand, since this sort of thing happened some years
ago to one of our laptops. Finally, the internal power supply up and
died, out of warranty, of course. The repair bill was $100 less than the
then current used value.

It is the most common problem in the laptops ever. The users most have the problems regarding the failure of the proper power of the weak battery. The troubleshooting process always starts with identifying what works. If the problem is power related (whether battery or a question of the laptop not turning on) the first step is establishing that power is getting to the laptop. This means checking that the LED on the transformer brick is lit, and if it isn't (or doesn't have an LED), that it's plugged into a good power outlet. You can check that by unplugging the transformer and simply plugging in a lamp. Some of the oldest notebook models have an internal transformer, so the line power (110 VAC in the U.S., 220 most other places) goes directly into the laptop body. The next question is whether or not any of the little LED status lights on the laptop light up with the power plugged in. Even the oldest models usually have a power good status light. If you have positive power status and the notebook simply won't turn on, the next check is the battery.
