Default Time and date

Can anyone please explain in simple terms why my Time and date settings
sometimes revert to Aug 2003, which I assume was original setup day.
Sometimes it is only the time - other times both change. I do occassionally
have problems closing down but these do not necessarily coincide with the
time/date problem. NB Not terribly computer literate, so simple remedy would
help. Tks.
