O.T. Can't logon to the internet::
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 (Seagate Barracuda 7200 HD 160Gb) with XP which I just installed without any issues. However I'm unable to logon to the Internet. This is the same computer that was able to logon not more than 2 yrs ago. I've changed nothing except the HD and the actual Ethernet cord and connected it to the L2 port instead of the L1 which is where my Dell 8500 is now connected. I called Verizon and they ran several diagnostic tests and had me reboot and power off/on but still my computer will not connect and all the tests showed green as do my indicator lights on my modem (Verizon GT704WGB) the power, DSL, and Internet indicators stayed solid on the modem while my Ethernet and wireless indicators flashed. Also my Eithernet plug-in on back of the computer showed green. So all the indicators are showing that there's nothing wrong. After running all the tests we then looked at my device manager which showed ? 'other devices' (with a yellow question mark) ? and indented below that were Ethernet Controller ? and Multimedia Audio Controller both with yellow question marks. I think the reason the Multimedia audio controller has a yellow question mark is because I don't have speakers. Once I do that should go away. However, according to Verizon, the Ethernet Controller with the yellow question mark means I need a new Ethernet card and software or drivers for my existing card. I already checked and I don't have any software disks. So my question is what can I do to get online with the 8200? Do I need to buy a new Ethernet card? What brand/make? or did I miss something when I installed XP and if so can't I go back and repair the installation? Thoughts/ Suggestions? Thanks, Robert |

Thanks, Robert If this is a fresh installation of Windows XP from its installation (i.e., not recovery) CD, then many of the Dell system drivers (viz., chipset, audio, LAN, etc.) will also need to be installed. They can be downloaded from he ftp://ftp.dell.com/Pages/Drivers/dimension-8200.html Consult the user's guide or manual and the specifications sheet to determine exactly which drivers need to be downloaded from this site. Install whatever is needed to eliminate the yellow warning arrows that had appeared in Device Manager. (Since the networking is not functional in this computer, find and use a computer that is working and connected to the Internet.) GR http://en.community.dell.com/support.../19697767.aspx "The Dell documentation (what users can access) does not list what the NIC is. In the downloads there is a 3Com Internal NIC driver and also Intel drivers. I would suspect one of the two is the right one." Back in that era, the 3Com 3C905C-TXM would have been a popular PCI NIC card (Ethernet card). There is a driver on the above ftp.dell.com site for it. Perhaps using a copy of Belarc Advisor, would identify it, but then Belarc probably needs a network connection. Using some kind of identification utility would help narrow it down, between the 3C905C and some Intel adapter. ******* You can run this on the 8200, because it should be built-in. Start : Run : msinfo32 then go to Components : Problem Devices and look for Ven : Dev information. You can look up Vendor and Device numbers here. http://pciids.sourceforge.net/pci.ids Example Ven and Dev. 10B7 is the Vendor (3COM). The 9200 is the Device code for a 3C905C card. 10b7 3Com Corporation 9200 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] The idea there is to narrow down whether it's 3Com or Intel for the NIC driver. Now go to your working computer, and download the NIC driver. ******* Some OEM computers, when you make the recovery discs for it, one of the discs is a driver CD. And the NIC driver might have been on there as well. You try to make the recovery CDs or DVDs, a couple days after getting the computer. For my laptop a couple years ago, it took a total of around five DVDs to burn copies of everything offered. You'd need to have a small pack of media or a spindle, to be ready for such a burning extravaganza. Paul |

Thanks, Robert Click "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", "System Restore" and create a restore point. Then, go into Device Manager, remove all device with problems, restart the computer and install the drivers one at a time as needed. Ben |
