Default Keep a corded ball mouse?

As I recall, and after looking at pics at Google Images, isn't the
Microsoft Intellipoint one of the earlier mice that were big (long,
tall, and fat)? Is that the profile you're looking for in a mouse to
fit into your hand?

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en...-200/JUD-00001
A corded USB female mouse (no balls).
That shows length and width but not height. To get the height, see:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...e200_0909A.pdf

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en...ouse/P58-00061
A bit fatter and longer.
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...useUSBV2.0.pdf
And it's a bit taller.
AND THIS ONE WORKS ON USB OR PS/2 ports! The signal differentiation
logic is built into the mouse. Cost is $15 at Newegg.

How do those dimensioncs compare to your old Intellipoint PS/2 mouse?

Paul's comment:
"Balled mice are a cleaning issue. The ball can also become
non-spherical
as it ages, which is annoying as well. You could be removing the ball
and cleaning the gunk off it once a week."

Not only the ball, but the roller shaft tends to pick up grease and gunk
from the ball. Also have had issues with lint in the roller shaft
bearings. Both of these cause skipping or failure to move.

Yes! The changeover from common ball mice to optical mice was a big
step forward.

My experience with cleaning ball mice was that I was seldom very
successful, perhaps because, as you say, they had become
non-spherical. Thanks for pointing that out; I hadn't realized before
that that was an issue.

it. Mine is a PS/2 type. How well it would work with an inexpensive
PS/2
to USB converter is another story, and from what little I've read on the
amazon reviews, that can be problematic (some got it to work, some
didn't).

FWIW, I am still using the vintage PS/2 Microsoft Mouse 2.0, even on
my new computers with an USB adapter. This mouse design has a nice,
firm and comfortable feel. They are around 20 years old by now?

For some reason, my motherboard/PC has problems with those PS/2-USB
adapters. I lose my mouse signals randomly with two different adapters
and mice. I gave up and used an USB optical mouse. It's not Windows XP
since a bootable Ubuntu showed USB losing connections.

The early Chessen used to mis-behave after ten minutes of operation.
That is fixed now. As long as you're buying relatively new stock,
you shouldn't be seeing any bugs in the USB to PS/2 conversion.

Is the symptoms the one where it loses connections randomly? Because
that is what I had with two different USB+PS/2 adapters with old PS/2
mice. This was almost three/3 years ago too.

A report from a Newegg reviewer, says the PS/2 to USB adapter
he just bought, uses a different chip. The Chesen is no longer
used, and another chip has replaced it. With different symptoms
I'm sure. Because the value added of those devices, is
dealing with "quirks" of the hardware connected to them.
That's why they're programmable (at the factory only).
