I remember this story from the early 80's. This guy worked at IBM
security development or something. If anybody knows about what others
could do to a computer, he was supposed to be one in the know. And he
friend saw him power down the his desktop, pulled the plug out of the
wall and disconnected the phone line.

His friend ask why are you doing all of that, the power is off and it is
safe. He stated you would be surprised what they could do as long as the
computer is plugged in and connected to the phone line.

I personally find that story very hard to believe myself. Desktops back
then the power switch actually physically disconnected the power (just
like pulling the power out of the wall). And even if someone tapped into
the phone line and could send any voltage, waveform, and/or signals, I
don't see anyway one could access anything on a powered down computer.

Although todays computers, devices, etc. are totally different. The
power button doesn't physically disconnect the power anymore. And there
are tasks that could wake the system up (even a backdoor hack I would
guess).

Absolutely agreed. I would not be surprised to discover that even off,
the contents of my hard disk are somehow accessible to outside parties.

It's a good thing I bought a few extra rolls of tinfoil
this week, to make my tinfoil hat a bit thicker.

They can't get you, if you're wearing your tinfoil hat.

The part I liked about that, is they had to write
an "encyclopedic" article about it :-)

Do you suppose the person who wrote the article,
also had a tinfoil beanie ? Only an "expert", should
write these articles.

Don't forget the CMOS battery!

The above is a joke, so please just LOL :-)

(Even if it isn't funny)

I think the cool dispassionate tone of the article adds a great deal to
the effect. I'm kind of envious :-)

Can tin foil prevent God from talking to you directly?

BTW, I heard that Asian witches (notably Chinese and Thai ones) could
curse someone using one's precise birth time in Lunar calendar format!

Not sure if it could affect Europeans, Africans and Indians though...

I dunno? Does God talk to you without a tin foil hat?

Seems to me there are good reasons not to use it. To wit:

"Don't use this alpha version to process important files and archives.
The code of this version contains big number of changes.
And probably there are some new BUGs."

"If you need more stable version, you can use previous versions: 7-Zip
9.25 alpha or 7-Zip 9.30 alpha."

That's only to scare the n00bs. ;-) I've been using 7-Zip beta versions
for ages now and never a problem. I've been using this latest alpha
version since it came out and no problems, so far. I use 7-Zip almost
every day to extract files. I can't say if there are any problems
creating 7z or ZIP archives.

But this alpha has only been available for a couple of days. That could
easily be too soon for bugs to show themselves. It appears to offer few
new features that would interest the average users (they're listed
here

http://sourceforge.net/p/sevenzip/di...read/49e6a4d4/

It seems to me that there's no need to rush into it.

Until this thread started, I didn't realize there was anything newer
than the version I already had, 9.20, from 2010. I updated to 9.32
alpha. Seems to look and act exactly like the old version.
