Search for windows-8 instead of windows8; alt.comp.os.windows-8 should
show up.

As a bonus, it's not listed in Google Groups, meaning less noise.

Some UseNet groups are chock-full of Google Groups users. Google
is a blight on UseNet, worse than any other in history.

That's very true. Fortunately my news reader allows me to set a
filter to just skip over posts from Google Groups. Works great.

How can you tell which newsreader they are using?

In the headers (CTRL-U in Thunderbird) there is a line beginning
"User-Agent:" which tells you. If you want to delete all messages
originating in Google groups you can set up a filter to look for another
header, "Message-ID", and filter any with "googlegroups" in Message-ID.

I changed AGENT.INI so the User-Agent (and X-Newsreader) header is shown
by default.

From the "User-Agent" entry in the message header. Here's yours:

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:24.0)
Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/24.2.0

With respect to UseNet... Google is a blight because they don't
play by the rules. I couldn't care less how stupid the users are,
ignoring subthreads takes care of that. The problem is worse but
similar to how AOL was. AOL didn't include a reference line, so
ignoring threads meant you still got to see every AOL post. With
Google Groups, the problem is bad formatting. Google's lousy
formatting shreds UseNet threads, especially in groups that are
full of Google users. Besides freedom of speech, UseNet's
threading is what makes it stand out from other forums.

And then there are posters who cannot properly introduce prior
authors. Not as big of a deal, but still annoying...

Good summary. And look where AOL is now. Hopefully they will be
joined by Google soon.

Those are the clueless I referred to.
