The first thing Satya Nadella (New CEO of Microsoft) should do is to fix
the Windows Live Mail so that it becomes useable for everybody on a
windows system.

First thing is nationalize microsoft then sell windows 8.1 dvd. Then he
should unite Windows 8 people with older version people.

You mean a mass wedding, like the Moonies? That's a great idea!

We can buy Windows 8.1 on DVD in the UK. Can't you?

Not going to happen. Like its predecessors (Internet Mail and News,
Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging, Outlook Express, and Vista's
Windows Mail) its legacy ware.

Msft two sole developed, updated and resource assigned products are
Win8x's Windows Mail and Outlook 2013. The only earlier versions of
email software that get updates are Outlook, and with rapidly
diminishing frequency (or only rarely for security or junk mail
show-stopper reasons) is Vista's Windows mail.

While Satya Nadella was named CEO, the larger and more significant news
is the naming of board member John Thompson as Chairman replacing Bill
Gates. Thompson started his career after college and spent 27 yrs at
IBM, 10 yrs as CEO of Symantec ending in 2009, currently runs Virtual
Instruments Inc. (company software tracks application and hardware
performance). Thompson joined MSFT's board in 2012.

What's likely is an increased focus on MSFT business software and cloud
services rather than the consumer side....thus holding any belief or
submitting requests to 'fix Widnows Live Mail' is a veritable pipe dream.

I'd prefer that he ditched WLM and developed a real, standards compliant
mail/news client - I think it would be easier than trying to mess with
WLM. After that I'd like to see him fork Windows and whilst keeping
Windows 8 for phones and tablets (if anyone insists?) produce a real,
improved operating system based on Windows 7. That's if Windows 7 need
any improving , of course - it does everything most people want already.

But Bill is still in there and apparently working three days a week
in the office, with tremendous influence over developments. some
think that is the really important change, Bill refocusing on MSFT
from the charity work that takes a lot of his time now.

Look for more cloud and more renting their software rather than buying a
license. In the end they want us to have a dumb terminal with everything
on their "cloud" or servers.

He has already stated that he is going to focus on mobil computing and
the "Cloud". Look for the Windows OS to get worse.

They have ditched WLM...the entire brand was deprecated quite some time
ago. It's legacy software with no ongoing resources assigned to the
products. The only ex-Live services are Outlook.com (fka Hotmail and
inherited years ago from MSN when that platform changed direction to a
media platform - news, video, etc) and SkyDrive. Office Apps (while
accessible under the old Live ID web UI has always been the Office
Team's responsibility). Mesh (fka Folder Sharing) now replace by
SkyDrive; Messenger (except for brief extension for mainland China)
replaced by Skye. That leaves the rebranded (dropped Live) Photo
Gallery/Movie Maker single app (formerly two separate apps) as the only
holdover (because of SkyDrive and other service integration) with a
marginal level of development.

MSFT will never again release a bundled mail and news client.
Office[Outlook] and Windows 8 mail app will continue to be the sole mail
clients. While Windows 8x and later may evolve to satiate some of the
desktop users concerns..most of that will be centered on the ability to
run Modern app in desktop mode - i.e. the Modern UI is here for the
foreseeable future if not forever. With mainstream support ending for
Win7 in less than a year the product for all practical purposes is
near-legacy with limited changes save reliability and security. Pieces
of Win7 will live on (as they have in Win8) but basing any future o/s on
Win7 is closer to a pipe dream than reality especially with Win7
requiring add-on applications for web UI/cloud sync-ability.

'Tremendous influence' ??? That remains to be seen. His return is
obviously welcome (since he still holds 'god status' with the rank and
file) though his presence could actually limit ideas for some time until
his role is actually understood...especially since he's done relatively
little for the last decade while SB ran the ship. Don't look for
anything significant to occur since he's just a single board member and
no longer chairman.

You say both these things like you are absolutely sure you are right.
I tend to agree with you on both of them, but there's no way I can be
completely sure. So let me ask why you are so sure. Do you know
something the rest of us don't?
