Default 8.0 to 8.1

I just installed 8.0 but the updates don't show 8.1. Do I merely have to
download all the updates to get it offered or what?

Thanks,

Did you check out the Store? It's one of the Metro Apps when you hit the
Windows key.

Windows 8.1 doesn't like it, if you've been moving storage for a user.

I have same problem. Did all updates but can't see them on installed updates
section. Tried to install KB2871389 (both Portuguese and Brazilian), after
searching on microsoft page, but it doesn't work.

I installed the Enterprise Evaluation Version 9200. It appears that one
need to know something special to get 8.1. Anyone know what that is? I
do have the KB installed.

You're probably leaving out some detail.

Since you needed an account to download that, simply use your account
to download the 8.1 evaluation version.

I have the 8.1 .iso. I just don't have a spare DVD. I mistakenly thought
I could get it from Windows Update. On Monday, I'll buy a DVD and
reinstall.

You don't have to do that (waste a DVD).

The Microsoft Store makes a ISO to USB key converter.
Use an 8GB or larger USB key. That's what I've used
for several OS installs since Windows 7 showed up.

Instructions link:

http://web.archive.org/web/201302152...usbdvd_dwnTool

Download the tool to make a bootable USB key.
Works for Windows 7 or Windows 8, or similar technologies
(bootsect, wim file in an ISO9660 etc)

http://web.archive.org/web/201302152...B-DVD-tool.exe

There is a trick to using the tool. It's a pretty
silly thing that Microsoft have done.

Microsoft needed a copy of bootsect. Bootsect is available
in 32 bit and 64 bit editions of ISO DVD files. The 64 bit edition
won't run on a 32 bit OS (on the preparation machine).

Say I'm sitting on my WinXP x32 machine, I install from
Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe above (which works just fine). Now,
I try to load Win8 x64 ISO onto a USB key. The tool will
extract a copy of bootsect.exe from the ISO file, and, it
will be getting a 64 bit edition of the program.
When the tool tries to run the extracted 64 bit bootsect.exe
on my WinXP, the tool will fail, and I get an unusable USB key.

To stop that, either make sure the preparation machine bitness,
matches the ISO bitness, or there is a second trick.

Find a modern 32 bit OS DVD, and extract the bootsect.exe from
that. Store that in this folder, next to the executable.
The program that actually prepares the USB key is
Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool.exe , but it wants to call
bootsect.exe to place the boot sector on the USB key.
And the copy of bootsect.exe must be able to execute
on the preparation machine and its OS.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apps\Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool

In that situation, I can install the microsoftstore
tool on my Windows 7 x64 laptop, and make a 64 bit USB
key there. I think I could also make a 32 bit USB key there.
The combo that won't work, is using my WinXP x32 OS
to prepare a USB 64 bit installer key. In which case,
finding a 32 bit bootsect.exe (even from a slightly older
DVD), might be an option for it. Then placed in the above folder.

Have fun,
Paul

If I understand you correctly, if I use a Win 7 64 bit machine to make
the bootable 64 bit .iso on a pen drive, it will work fine on a 64 bit
desktop? (which is what I want to do).
