Rest in Peace Media Center

Alternatives are available in one form or another.

The usual grumbling and support will obviously attempt to voice concern.

That's a bugger. If I get a PC to replace my Win 7 PC I'll have to find a
new way of recording TV. There's NextPVR which seems quite good and there
are proprietary apps which come with USB DVB-T adaptors. WTV and DVR-MS are
good file formats because they contain everything in the one file - video,
audio, subtitles and metadata (eg plot summary). TS, which NextPVR uses,
does most of this but you lose the metadata.

Shame that MS pulled the plug on MediaCentre.

Why are MS so appallingly bad about producing apps which will work with all
versions of Windows? Outlook Express (XP) wouldn't work on Vista; Windows
Mail (Vista) wouldn't work on 7. Now Media Centre (7 and 8) won't work on
10. They seem to weld these apps into the operating system instead of making
a self-contained installation file which will install on any version of
Windows. I'd quite happily install WMC from 7 on 10 if it were possible,
even if there were no new updates to it.

I've lost count of the number of times I'm one of the tiny minority that
actually uses a product or service which is cancelled for lack of interest.
Evidently I'm not a sheep that follows the herd :-)

I have no interest in recording to a Sky box or a PVR because the recordings
are usually stuck on the box and can't be modified (eg editing out
continuity announcements and adverts), backed up to a second disk or
organised into a folder structure (eg films, drama, documentaries). And you
don't get a way of *proving* that a recording has been scheduled remotely
when you're way from home - Sky's ability to do this sends a request but
you've no way of confirming that the box has received it.

If you read the article it has a link to an alternative, Media Portal,
which looks quite competent.

You can "disable" it. See:

http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Windows-Media-Center

Be forewarned, doing this can create some problems. See:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2606237

Thank you, I know how to disable it but I want to uninstall it.

Media Center is a selectable Windows feature - included with the o/s or
an add-on to the o/s. It can be turned on or off. An uninstaller is
not included.

For Win 8.1 Pro it was an add-on which upon adding the feature changed
the product key (and the product key, if not already, to a retail
Windows version).

To remove Media Center completely, reinstall Windows 8.1 and use the
original 8.1 Product key, not the one provided with Media Center.

On Windows 8, installing the Media Center option adds two CODECs
to the system. This allows DVD playback for example, so it could be
some sort of MPEG decoder. That's about all you get of any value
from the Media Center (if you don't own a tuner to do recordings with).

I have Media Center on one of my two copies of Windows 8 here,
and hardly even know it is there. Because I have no Media Center
compatible tuner for it.

I see no reason to remove it. I only installed it, because
the license key for the added feature was being given away
for free at the time.

Paul
