Strange Box on Desktop
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I am seeing a small box in the lower
right corner of my desktop. It says software download complete with checkboxes for install now or install later. There is nothing to tell me where this box originated and I could find nothing in the startup files that seemed likely to create this. I have run a full scan with Kaspersky and it found nothing. I would like to get rid of this box as I think it is probably malware. I wonder if it could be for Windows 10 upgrade but have no way of knowing. Any suggestions? |

Information on GWX (Get Windows Ten) and '583 is here. http://www.howtogeek.com/218856/how-...fication-tray/ However, once the download is done, you will have about 6GB of files in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT If you delete that folder, then you cannot install Windows 10. If you were to use MediaCreationTool (on purpose) to get a Windows 10 DVD, that is stored in C:\$WINDOWS.~WS You can try cleanmgr.exe to delete those, if you cannot otherwise figure out a way to clean them out. But as for the stealth download, you could have tried "disableGWX" registry addition earlier on. And now, deleting the folders solves the immediate problem. And you can follow that with DisableGWX if you want. Define GWX first. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\Gwx and then install the control underneath that key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\Gwx DisableGwx reg_DWORD 1. To make that into a right-click file, put the four lines into a text file with a .reg extension, like this, ************* disableGWX.reg ***************** Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\GWX] "DisableGWX"=dword:00000001 ************* end disableGWX.reg ***************** and you can Merge that. (The considered opinion here, is disableGWX is easier than trying to stop all related updates, one by one...) http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=37740076 Paul |

Have you installed any Verizon software or drivers on your machine? Possibly in support of a Samsung phone or tablet? Yes, I have installed Verizon software to support my Samsung phone. Is that what this is about? |

It turns out that it is a Verizon update as suggested in one of the responses. Strange way to show it, with no identification of where it came from. I clicked on install now and the Windows permission box came up asking if I wanted to install this software from Verizon. Thanks for the response. |

Move its window so it does not obscure the problematic window. Click on the web icon in Process Explorer's toolbar. Then click on the problematic window. Process Explorer will highlight which process owns the handle on that window. |
