Default XP install

Now that MS has dropped XP what is the situation on installing XP from an
install disk or a backup? As I recall, you had to contact MS to do so. No
more? Anyone know?

I have no plans to do so right now but one never knows.

TIA

if you have a windows 7 computer you can use xp-mode

I did it right today for a customer: once installed xp asked to install
about 100 updates - as first round

They just opened up the authentification server. Now you could install
the same copy of XP on 5 machines a day and they would all sail
through from what I see. I found this out when I inadvertantly
installed the same key on 2 machines in a row.
I was worried the updates would stop and I reloaded all of the old
machines around here to get a fresh start on them. The latest was a
few weeks ago.
You first update will be something like 137 updates from a fresh SP3
load.

From where, or how?
When I try to run Windows Update I get the usual message that XP is no longer supported.
Is there an ftp/http archive of all the XP updates - and where is it?

https://web.archive.org/web/20130509...7-details.aspx

After some tricks, gets me

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...XP-x86-enu.exe

15,452,536 bytes

I originally downloaded that item 4/17/2009. Using the
file name, is how I was able to track it down again.

If you're after some other language version, then
good luck.

All the updates are undoubtedly on the catalog server,
but that would require extra work. Using Internet Explorer 6,
you should be able to browse here. This site needs to install
an ActiveX plugin, to run the "shopping cart" interface.
And no, it's not meant to make things easy to find. Eventually,
the site interface will be redesigned, to work with more
than Internet Explorer browser. At the moment, this
doesn't even work with MS Edge browser.

If I use "Windows XP" as a search term, it lists 879 results.

To have your own personal cache of security updates only,
you could have used wsusoffline kit in the year 2014. I
have a 2GB folder from that adventure. You would need
to find an older version of the wsusoffline kit, back
when it still supported WinXP. And that only covers
security updates, and misses valuable optional updates
you could definitely use.

Windows Update interface itself should really work. If
I run that right now on this WinXP machine, it still
interfaces (but there are no new updates). To do that,
the web browser must have the most recent plugin
installed for Windows Update to run. While in the
past, a virgin install "bootstraps" to acquire the
plugin, it sounds like in your case this is not
working. And I do recollect having to (temporarily)
install a more-advanced Internet Explorer version,
just to bootstrap a clean install I was doing.
I removed the more-advanced Internet Explorer version
after I was finished.

Install WinXP. Windows Update doesn't work.
Install a later version of Internet Explorer.
Visit Windows Update. It gets the latest plugin.
Download updates and install.
Now, uninstall Internet Explorer and return to
the IE6 I was using. This returns the OS to
default conditions (plus having received updates).

Today, I would probably use my Wsusoffline installer
first, then try visiting Windows Update and see
what happens. In any case, I have my copy of
IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe for emergencies.

Thanks for that info, I'l try it later in the week.
I should have mentioned that due to problems with the XP file explorer (keeps crashing) I tried
doing a "Repair" from my slipstreamed Windows XP Home + SP3 installation disk, which I assume has
overwritten many settings. I did then manually install IE8, but still no luck, I keep getting a
message about browser not supported, but that's another matter...
