Monitor does not come on
I have a new computer.
My monitor is brand new and it works. When the computer is booted up, it does not come on. Computer only has HDMI and a VGA connection. Very surprised that it had no DVI output. My monitor has VGA and DVI, but NO HDMI. Any ideas ? |

Look at the manual . |

Look at the manual . I've just had the same sort of problem when using an external monitor on an elderly HP Pavilion ZD8000 laptop that I was given (a mighty 17" wide-screen beast!). Initially its own screen was obviously failing (loads of vertical lines) - and after some use, the left half went completely blank. Undeterred, I connected my normal (Philips) 4:3 ratio monitor to it, and it worked find (although I did need to alter the display resolution to suit). However. with a smaller spare LG Flatron, I could only get it to show the initial Windows boot screen - and then it went totally blank - showing a message something like "Unable to display these settings". Using only the right hand side of the laptop's own screen, with some difficulty I was able to play about with the resolution and refresh rate - and eventually I hit on a combination where the external monitor worked normally - except during the initial boot-up period. I'm assuming that either the laptop or the monitor (or both) are not automatically detecting and providing some settings which at least give you a temporary - but usable - display - at least good enough for you then to fine-tune things. So, with the OP's problem, would it be worth while trying a different monitor (if one is available)? If some usable display can be obtained, then try a selection of different resolutions and refresh rates settings (even if they are incorrect for the second monitor) - and each time, swap the VGA over to the new monitor, and see if anything appears? -- Ian |
