Default Irfanview wiped out Windows background

It's annoying that Irfanview Control-Shift-X overwrites Win10 wallpaper
%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallp aper
without even asking.

Undoing the Windows 10 wallpaper constantly is annoying.
I don't see an option to disable control+shift+x in Irfanview.

I tried locking down the Windows 10 wallpaper PNG but that failed.
Irfanview still overwrote the "TranscodedWallpaper" PNG file.

Other programs use control+shift+x for cropping.
Finger memory is strong with control+shift+x.

How can Windows 10 stop Irfanview from changing the "TranscodedWallpaper"
file when control+shift+x is pressed?

Best solution is to stop using Apps that are given away for nothing. Go
and buy Photoshop Elements or Corel PaintShop Pro. Both products can be
bought from Amazon very cheaply and Licensed!!!!!!!!

On the Security tab, you can modify the permissions.

https://i.postimg.cc/NjG9BNyw/everyone-deny.gif

Using Built-in Security Principles, add "Everybody"
as an owner. Then, modify the permissions in the "Deny"
column to Deny writing. Just Writing, not anything else.
Not Full Control. "Deny" "Full Control" is too too clever
(tried it - Oops!).

I really would have liked to tick the "Modify" box as
well, but ticking Modify also turns off "Read" and
that's no good.

So using "Deny" "Write" is the best I can do for you.

In Linux, they have an actual "Immutable" bit, which
is what I'm trying to emulate here. Immutable can
of course, always be "corrected" by root, but it's a
sufficient flag for most innocent purposes (wouldn't
stop a malware). Whereas the Deny in my example,
can be steamrolled with stuff like TakeOwn, if
you're patient.

Usage of "Deny" in security, is not considered
a best practice. But where this applies, is when
combined on folders, and with "Inheritance".
Inheriting a Deny from a top level folder, is
extremely annoying, because you can't figure out
where it is coming from. Flipping a deny on
a data file like that is probably OK - someone
can figure it out later, as the damage is
quite local.

Maybe a tool like AutoIT or similar could
intercept a hotkey, but that's outside my
pay scale. And the copy of IrfanView I have
here, has absolutely no preferences for disabling
hotkeys.

With AutoHotkey and one other, you can disable or reassign any key or
key combination. ONe is free and requires some thought to use, and the
other costs a bit but is easy.

They can both do program specific changes, either only changing keys for
specific program(s) or changing keys for all but specific programs.

Now that I have one of them, I no longer have to use a multi-media
keyboard. I assign unused keys to volume up, down, and mute.

This photo is good because that is what I tried and failed it before.
Tried many options. Ooops too! Very tricky it is.

All of these need be disabled in Irfanview!!!!!!!!
Control + Shift + C
Control + Shift + F
Control + Shift + T
Control + Shift + S
Control + Shift + X
Control + Shift + P

Using Built-in Security Principles, add "Everybody"
as an owner.

Did not have an "Everyone" in my properties of
%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallp aper

Alls I have is System, the user, and the Administrator.

I change for the user only.

I think this works!
Yay!

You could always use a resource editor[*] to edit the accelerator
resource inside the .exe and remove the Control+Shift+X accelerator.

At the same time, you would probably want to edit the menu resource
and remove the text "Ctrl+Shift+X" from the end of the menu item.
Note that editing the menu alone will not disable the Control+Shift+X
accelerator.

Strange. According to the IrfanView documentation, IrfanView does not
overwrite your existing "TranscodedWallpaper" PNG file. IrfanView
writes a new file "IrfanView_Wallpaper.png", and then changes your
Windows wallpaper setting to use the new file.

Also there are several dozen short cut keys in Irfanview. So if you
start changing short cut keys and use the short cut keys, be careful you
don't change some thing you normally use.

I've been a happy user of AutoHotkey for a couple of years now. I like
it a lot. My keyboard already has keys for volume up, down, and mute,
so I have no interest in doing what you suggest. But just out of
curiosity, what are the unused keys you use for that?

I use Pause/Break for mute, and on the numeric keypad I use
/ for vol down and
* for vol up.

I wanted to make exceptions, to enable pause to still be pause when
using cmd or tcc/le, but I couldn't figure out how with the free one,
and didn't try with the paid one.

Also wanted an exception for / and * when using calc. Couldn't figure
that out either.

But in 25 years, I've only used pause once, and I tend to click on the
screen image of / and * (and all the numbers too), so it's okay.

I could** use a multimedia keyboard at home but when I take a long trip
I take a keyboard and the smaller the better.

When I was on the first trip, I had forgotten to bring the script for
the free one and couldn't figure it out again, so I paid for the other
and I really should use it more. It's really easy to use.

**I have a standard wood desk about 60** years old and the keyboard
rests on the front of the drawer and the front of the desk. **A friend
who worked in the Wall St. area found it on the curb and called me at
lunchtime. I met him after work and he helped me put it on my Catalina.
It must have been at least 20 years old then and that was 40 years ago.

If I needed more keys, I'd use some of the F keys. Right now I use F11
for full screen browser, F2 to rename, F3 to find, maybe F5 to reload
and conceivably F1 for help. I don't think I use the other 7 or 9.

(Of course F keys used at boot don't count.)

| You can't. It's in the program, not the OS.

I never thought I'd see the day that something
couldn't be done in IV. It has loads of "skin"
options but no option to change hotkeys! Hacking
a resource shouldn't be necessary.

roll-ups are *awful*. fold-ups are *much* better, folding to about the
size of a smartphone.

Well, you saw my next post about unused F keys.

using cmd or tcc/le, but I couldn't figure out how with the free one,

Just tried / and * in calc with the extra keys and none of them did
anythi... Oops, looking too closely at the Calc window. Actually both
did the same with all 3 extra keys as they did alone, adjust the volume.

It's harder to test Pause because I need a bat file or something that
will run long enough to be paused. I have one or more somewhere but
don't remember what they are.

Also wanted an exception for / and * when using calc. Couldn't figure
that out either.

Thanks for the suggestion. I use the Dell full size keyboard with the
very thin border around the keys and no more. I wish it would fit in the
computer bag and maybe that it doesn't is why I sometimes use the
computer keyboard, but it does fit in my suitcase. My first long trip
I had the wrong phone** for data and I actually carried the laptop with
me on a couple trips within the trip, and actually used it at night
three times to plan the next day, parked outside one hotel or another
using their wifi. Then I would go to sleep in the car. I figured I
already had the expense of a house in the USA, plus a room I was paying
$900/month for, and I refused to rent a hotel or hostel room in
addition. I can't afford 3 homes. But the second big trip I got the
right phone and most of the planning for the next day can be done on
that, if need be.

**I think if you buy a phone that's $500 or more, it will probably have
both US and Europe 3G and 4G bands, but the first phone was very nice in
most ways but only had USA bands, 1 and 3, or 1 and 2, or 4 or
something. It timed out on anything involving data, though it worked
fine for phone calls with a local sim.

So for the second phone I bought straight from Hong Kong, iirc, or
China. No warranty unless I sent it back to Hong Kong. But it lasted
a year without breaking so the warranty would be over anyhow.

Back to the previous Blu phone, like I say it worked fine in the US,
cost less than $100, 5" screen, FM radio (which I only used once) but
didn't have a magnetometer (which it turned out I never used anyhow, and
if I were hiking I'd take my boy scout wrist compass which I got from my
older brother 60 years ago, which still works fine of course), didnt'
have On The Go (which it turned out I don't need because there is the
MyPhoneExporer app.

I used it all the time on the first trip, 11 weeks long and it broke the
last night I was there, when I was 2 miles from the airport to leave.
The on/off switch was part of the narrow silver band that ran around the
phone, made of plastic, and of course it broke because I kept pushing it
and bending it. I was still able to stick something in the hole and
make a call from the airport, and it would still be a good phone if I
could stop the phone from going dark, blanking, when I havent' used it
for 30 seconds all the time and requiring me to push a stick into the
hole.
