Default Using the F12 key to take screenshots

Has anyone seen a system that, when the F12 key is pressed, a screenshot
is generated?

A friend said that's how he does screenshots, but I have no further
information on this.

Sounds like a laptop where some special keys share with function keys,
and need to be pressed in combination with a "Fn" key (sometimes now the
Fn key acts in the opposite sense to a few years ago)

Ctrl+F12 is the Irfanview setting to get a screenshot.

My Irfanview is Ctrl + F11, I believe. But it's configurable, anyway.

Possibly, but in this case it's likely a desktop. And he made no
indication there were 2 key presses.

As I mentioned the "sense" of the Fn key is now sometimes reversed, you
don't need the Fn+key to get the special key, but you do need it to get
the function key, IYSWIM.

Also some desktop keyboards are now catching the "Fn key disease", e.g

He may have remapped F12 as printscreen using a program such as Key Tweak.

Irfanview has a setting for the key(s) for doing screenshots.

One of my colleagues uses a piece of freeware called PrintKey2000 to
generate screenshots. As I recall, you can configure it to use any
otherwise unused key combo as the hotkey.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PrintKey_2000

It's possible that your friend uses something like that.

This does not seem likely. My impression is he is talking about his
work computer, and he's a Farmer's agent.

I guess he's not using the Windows 10 "Game Bar", which is capable of
taking screenshots and/or video captures of the screen. I believe those
features both need a qualifying key to go along with F12, for example.

Bring up the Game Bar by pressing Win+G.

F11 was already in use when I installed Irfanview. It's used by a
systray utility that opens the DVD tray.
Irfanview (marvellous program! Good programmer/s) recognised that, and
so used F12.

It is!!! Far more capable than anything I use it for.

I learned he was using F12 when I was doing a presentation to my small
networking group on taking screenshots using W10. In preparing the
presentation, I played with the Game Bar, not impressed with it or Paint
3D. Paint 3D made me feel like I was in the 2nd grade.

In no time, the presentation went totally off the rails! I kept getting
questions on doing screenshots on a Mac!

You know how you always hear how business use Windows? For those in
attendance, 4 of 6 use Macs, the F12 user has a 2010 iMac, and one
person who was not in attendance has a dead Mac she and her husband will
be replacing.

In the future, my presentations will be even more generic, and I'll
cover both Macs and Windows, as best I can, in my 30 minutes of allotted
time.

The group meets tomorrow, and with luck, F12 guy will be in attendance.
I'll see if he's got 10 minutes to show me how F12 works on his system.
