Category View Missing in XP Control Panel

Hello,

What's going on with my control panel? Currently it is
in Classic View and I can't change it back to XP Version,
i.e. Category View. This option is gone from the left
task pane!

Open Folder Options | General tab | Tick: "Show common tasks in folders" | Apply | OK
Does
Control Panel ^
Switch to Category View
show up now?

Thanks, but it didn't work out.

I even tried selecting "Use Classic windows folders",
hitting apply, then selecting "Show common tasks in
folder" and hitting apply again, just to see if I could
wash the bug out. No luck.

of the new XP style, classic style or allow the user to select the preferred style. Go to
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'ForceClassicControlPanel' and edit
the value according to the settings (0 = force new, 1 = force classic). Exit your registry, you may
need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.]

Aha, it worked!

Actually, what I did was just delete the
DWORD 'ForceClassicControlPanel' altogether, so that no
forcing happens at all. Only when I deleted it did
the "Control Panel Switch .... " option show up in the
left bar of the control panel.

How does one create a new value? And in particular, a new DWORD
value? Where do the settings 0 and 1 come from?

That "HKEY_CURR..." path is like the path of a folder and its
subfolders. A registry value is like a file. Left pane is the folder
tree. Right pane is the file list. Quite similar to Windows Explorer.

To create a new value, right-click on an empty area in right pane.
Select "New" then click on "DWORD Value". Change the name of the value.
Then double-click it to edit its data. Enter 0 or 1 then press OK. Just
like creating a new text note file where you need to keep this
instruction.

As for where the 0 and 1 came from... Microsoft decides what means what.
We're just following what's been decided.
