Default printer driver won't install -- epson stylus photo 960

I have an epson stylus photo 960 and am running windows xp
home edition. I can't install the printer driver. Epson
says its an xp problem because when I click on printers &
faxes/add a printer, I get the error "operation could not
be completed."

I had an epson awhile ago, but I gave it away. In any
case, it's no longer visible in the printers & faxes
window, although I don't remember uninstalling it.

This is what happens: (1) I turn on the computer. (2) the
bubble pops up "found new hardwa epson stylus 960" (3)
when I try to install the printer driver from epson,
approved for windows xp, I get the error "the rpc server
is unavailable."

Everytime I try to fix this, I uninstall the files for the
printer driver that are able to be installed before
the "rpc server" error pops up.

What can I do? This is very frustrating. I've seen that
people have had similar problems with HP printers, but
none of the fixes I've seen so far on the web have helped
me.

The RPC error usually occurs when the PC is trying to print to a network
printer, not a local one!

See: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;282833
Error Message Appears After Printing to a Network Printer

Take a look in the Control Panel, doubleclick on Admin Tools and then
Services. Scroll down to the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) and check that
it's set to Automatic - it should also be Started in its Status column.

Now, let's check to ensure all the old printer drivers are now gone from XP.

Doubleclick on Printers & Faxes in the Control Panel.... You say there is no
printer there, so let's check the drivers are gone too. From the Toolbar,
select File, Server Properties. Look in the Drivers tab. If you see
entries for the old Epson printer, highlight each and select Remove.

Now disconnect the printer and reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer.

Download the software from the Epson website at http://tinyurl.com/9ld4

Install the software and only connect the printer when the software tells
you to do so. Any better?
