Network printer appears as USB?
I've installed a network printer on one of the clients on a small LAN.
The printer is hosted on another computer. It's connected via USB on the host computer. The installation on the client shows that the printer is a USB printer instead of a network printer. That seems like it will confuse people working on this computer. Nothing seems to change this. For example, adding a new printer to the client, finding the network printer, installing it will result in a new printer that's connected to a port called "USB - xxxxxxxxx" Is this normal? If so, why? Thanks, Fred |

Network printer appears as USB?
Cari,
Thanks for the reply. The *only* connection on the XP client is Ethernet - it's a laptop. There are two networked printers used by this client that are both hosted on one other computer. Here's the information on each. The first one is the one in question: XP client: Port: USB-LexmarkX83 ?????????? Description: Printer Port ?????????? Printer: Lexmark X83 Color Share name on the host: Lexmark X83 Color There's another printer connected via the netowork using the same host computer: On the same client as above: Port: \\LIONHEART\Brother HL-1250 Laser Description: Local Port Printer: Brother HL-1250 on LIONHEART Share name on the host: Brother HL-1250 Laser "Cari (MS-MVP)" wrote in message ... The shared names should be no more than 12 characters/number, with no spaces
in it and no illegal characters, including, but not limited to, _, - and *. Try shortening the shared names of the printers! Cari www.coribright.com "Fred Marshall" wrote in message ... Network printer appears as USB?
Cari,
Using a "legal" share name for the printer in question has no effect. It does work but the Port seems strange in that it says USB-Lexmark83 instead of something like \\LIONHEART\Lexmark83 Fred "Cari (MS-MVP)" wrote in message ...
