I've struggled a couple weeks on this and spent the last
12 hours or so today and about 9hrs yesterday reading through the posts on this board and i haven't seen anything yet that will help so please!!!! I hope someone can help. my network has 2 computers, one compaq amd 733mhz 350ram running 'win me' one gigapro(via ezra) 733mhz 350ram it ran 'win 98' my printer is a lexmark x73 installed on the 'win me' networked great, printed great all was fine in my world. then a virus destoyed my 'win 98' i got rid of the virus but i couldn't reinstall 'win 98' because i had upgraded my mother board and processor (the bios had changed) so i bought the full version of 'win xp home' i did a complete install reformat and everything i went to the lexmark site got the new printer drivers for the 'win xp' i uninstalled and installed completely before i tried each of these things i have tried: installed the printer on the 'xp', it works great on the 'xp', all of the functions work on the 'xp', i can see it on the 'me' i click the add printer, follow the steps, all goes well, restart and try to print but i get a printer error (printer will not communicate bidirectional support not working) bidirectional support is checked, on both comps the printer is shared and the shared files swap just fine in both directions it just won't print installed printer on the 'me',it works great on the 'me', all of the functions work on the 'me', i can see it on the 'xp' i click the add printer, follow the steps, all goes well, restart and try to print but i get a printer error (printer will not communicate bidirectional support not working) bidirectional support is checked, on both comps the printer is shared and shared files swap just fine in both directions it just won't print ( i have also tried it with bidirectional clicked off on both and on each individually) i tried complete installs on both comps with the printer hooked up to each as it installed, then moved the printer around to each comp trying to route a print job to the computer that still couldn't get either comp to route a printer job but the comp that had the printer on it, worked fine my settings xp home settings: network settings: general tab: linksys Lne100tx ethernet adapter: no conflicts client for micro networks file and printer share Qos packet only tcp/ip installed properties: General tab: IP adress(when i didn't use the default one i couldn't share files) 192 168 0 1 sub 255 255 255 0 gateway (blank nothing) use the following dns--- both blank advanced tab: ip settings: same ip automatic metric - checked dns tab: app pimary and connect specific dns - checked register this connect add in dns - checked wins tab: enable lmhosts - checked netbios setting tried all 3 (default, enable, disable) with the default and enable no difference check - disable files won't share options tab: tcp/ip filtering properties: all - permit all - checked enable tcp/ip - checked Authentication tab: enabled - (tried both) checked and unchecked advanced tab: can't check turned off printer settings: server properties: ports: (my comps are 'a' and 'b' where a='win me' and b='win xp') i've tried a plain lexmark port that shows up as \\b\lexmark description is standard tcp/ip port i've tried \\a\lexmark which is the location of the printer on the other comp description is 'Lan manager printer port' the driver is the correct one printer settings: sharing tab: ive tried sharing and not sharing ports tab: ive tried both of the above ports plus print to file and ive tried bidirectional - checked and unchecked ive tried pooling but it won't let me pool to the \\a\lexmark it says its not a valid port? advanced tab: ive tried start print after last page is pooled i've tried print directly to printer print processor: i've tried every setting win me settings: network settings: config tab: client for mico networks properties: loggon and restore - checked linksys adapter properties: drivertype tab: enhanced - checked bindings tab: tcp/ip - checked tcp/ip dns config tab: disable - checked gateway tab: blank wins config tab: use dhcp for wins - checked ip adress tab: obtain an ip automatically - checked detect connection to net media - checked netbios tab: enabled - checked(can't change) advanced tab: allow binding to atm - no bindings tab: client for micro net - checked file and print share - checked file and printer share for mico networks Printer settings: print to usb port correct driver spool settings: start printing after last page is spooled enable bidirectional support (i've tried it both checked and unchecked) spool data format: ive tried everysetting sharing tab: shared as - checked shared name - lexmark no password if there are anyother settings i don't know them both computers are set to 'home' as a network name i restarted the comp or comps after each settings change i guess thats it if you can help i'd be more than thankful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps. how do you turn off the annoying popups? everytime i turn around the comp has a popup telling me something i already know or just did? 'win xp' even sends a popup to 'win me' saying that a newly unpn or unpd device is now avail? about the residential gateway device??? i sure wish i could turn that off !!!! |
