XP and Lexmark Z42

Am having problems getting my new Gateway500s to see my
Lexmark Z42 printer at startup. I've installed the latest
driver from lexmark and have tried the driver in xp. Both
do the same thing. I get a communication error on my
first print request of the session. After I toggle the
power switch on the printer, it prints fine for the rest
of the session. After I power down my computer and
restart it, I have to go through the same process of
cycling the printer's power switch at the first print
request before it prints. Any suggestions on getting the
computer to initialize the printer at startup? Tried
Gateway and lexmark tech support and they've yet to
figure it out? Short of buying a new computer/printer,
any clues? Thanks
