Windows XP pro

My windows program keeps freezing. It will run any where from 10 minutes to
1 1/2 hours and then the cursor will freeze and windows is unresponsive.
What is the best way to find out what is doing this?

More information is needed to help.

Can you immediately reboot the computer or do you have to shut down for a
period of time before it will work again? - overheat problem.
Have you recently installed any new programs or hardware on the system? -
latest drivers or patches installed, meet XP compatibility.
How long has the problem been going on?
Have you been accessing the internet without discriminating where you go and
what you download? - various malware programs.

Yes I can immediately reboot, tried installing an additional fan but didn't
help
No new programs except for xp updates.
Have checked for viruses with McAfee and shows none.
Have tried shutting down various background programs but it still locks up.
It lasts any where from 3 minutes to 3/4 hour before it freezes.
Tried running the cpu at a slower speed but was the same!

Some times when downloading from a site i cannot start the download. All I
get is a small icon in the upper left hand corner and thats it. Even if I
disable my download demon i get the same thing.

My last suggestions prior to a total rebuild of XP is to shut down, unplug,
open case, remove and reseat all memory, video cards, and other cards on the
motherboard. See if that resolves the problem. Occasionally a marginal
memory chip or video card will do what you are describing. Be careful when
removing and reinserting the cards and chips.

If this doesn't solve the problem, it appears to be a software problem and
it may only be solved by doing a clean XP install. Before doing that,
however, I would try a restore to a point before the problem started and/or
a repair install. Try to backup data files to some source prior to doing
any of the above. Good Luck.

Here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, MVP:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../q303/4/01.asp

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.

One thing to try - because the check is quick. It is often a result of
the mouse driver and the video driver arguing over which controls the
pointer. It is easy to check on - Control Panel - Display - Settings,
Click Advanced, and on the Troubleshoot page reduce the acceleration
slider one notch or two. If one does it, there is negligible loss of
performance: if two are needed look for updated video drivers from the
maker's site.

I've been looking for that for days and finally found it. You can also
right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Settings | Advanced | Troubleshoot
