XP and 98SE
HI, I have a 98SE computer setup for ICS on a network at
home and at work. Just bought a laptop with XP home and set it up to connect to the LAN at either place, but when the laptop is booted up on either network it causes the ICS computer to dial up the internet. I can not find any program that causes this or anything in networking. This doesn't happen with the 98 systems. Any help. thanks |

XP and 98SE
Your Win98 ICS host is using a dial-on-deman interface, so what that means
is that it will dial the ISP anytime a computer on the network tries to reach the Internet. On XP there are a few things which can cause this, most notably Windows Update. You can check your windows update settings by right clicking MyComputer, select Properties. On the SYstem Properties dialog, select "Automatic Updates" and if the "Keep my computer up to date" is checked, that is probably your culprit. There may be others but start there first. -- Paul.
