Error 678 : Remote computer did not respond

Am trying to connect to UUNet Network using a modem
connection and this error throws up. I have already tried
resolving the issue like :
- reinstalling the latest PAL from the vendor
- changing the modem speed and other things that is
recommended by Help and Support Center for Modem
Troubleshooter
- similar set-up ie PAL with same phone number (username,
password etc) works well on other laptop the only
difference bieng that it runs on NT.

I have read that this is a known error / issue in XP but
the solution doesn't seem to work ? Can someone help me
out?

I've had the same problem the past few days. After multiple support calls routed to India and a telco home line check (that was 48 hrs wasted time), I finally got an intelligent answer from the WA tonight. Solution: reformat the HD and re-install Windows
. Known windows bug with no resolution. I'd like to hear a better solution.
