Performance problems after upgrading ME to XP
Hi. Am in a bit of a struggle with this computer. I
upgraded Windows ME to Windows XP pro sp1. Have installed updates, etc and still have major performance issues. The pc has a p3 500mhz processor which is more than adequate for the users needs and I recently installed another 256 mb stick of ram to bring total up to 384mb. Again, this is more than sufficient for the users needs. I have defragged, scanned and removed viruses and adware. All unnecessary progrmas have been removed from start up. Still, it has performance issues. I even added a second drive as a swap drive to give the overall performance a boost. Still no good. Display tends to flicker on start up and when starting a game (Medal of Honor, Allied Assault I think). Machine overall is very slow and I am at the end of what I can think of to do here. Has anyone else had these problems whe upgrading a computer from windows me to windows xp pro? Any ideas on what I can do? Thanks all. Tim You can reply at tacinc@ hotdak.net |

Performance problems after upgrading ME to XP
This is to be expected - XP is a more robust OS, thus being a bigger
resource hog. Suggest turning off all of XP's visual bell's and whistles - i.e. menu fading, (basically everything when you click on My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Performance button - click the "Adjust for best performance" option). If you really want all those bells and whistles, then you'll need to upgrade your hardware, suggest a 1-1.5 GHz at minimum. -- Star Fleet Admiral Q @ your service ************************************************* "Tim C" wrote in message ... Performance problems after upgrading ME to XP
Understandable (by the way, should I delete the original
posts in my reply when I reply to the reply? not sure the ettequitte thing here sorry) but Ihva e run xp on less of a processor (p3 350mhz with 192 mb ram) with petter peroformance than this. What I am wondering is if since me was such a sucky system is it causing problems with the upgrade that a fresh install should be the correct way to go. I have the software but would like to do so with "least administtratiove effort, if you know what I mean. Thanks for the advice because I may go that way next if no other solution presents itself.
