Does anybody know of any free downloads available that now they have it,
they couldn't possibly be without it?

I enjoy checking out www.freebyte.com (I have no financial interests). I
disagree with their opinion of "Zonealarm", which is a firewall that I would
never trade off. For anti-virus there was "AVG, by Grisoft", but I also
learned of the free (for home users) "Avast" anti-virus which I found easier
for my parents to get a hold of.

I don't feel that everything on their site is for everyone, and again I'll
state that I do not necessarily agree with their opinion - but it's a great
place to take off from & decide for myself.

Cheers,
~MK

Did it occur to you to simply google on "free downloads"? It produces quite
a list.

Firefox should be number one for security reasons: http://www.mozilla.org/
Check the reasons: http://www.myscacc.org/browser_vulnerabilities.htm

You could add "TBhide" [Taskbar Hide]
from:http://home25.inet.tele.dk/mb/tbhide , plus some of Mike Lin's stuff
specifically "Startup Control Panel" and "Startup Monitor"
[http://www.mlin.net]. Another spell check program is "tinySpell" from:
http://www.tucows.com/preview/307990.html .

Hi Harry, doesn't the free version of the DivX codec contain adware? or am I
mistaken about this?

Not if you just install the codex, and not the viewer.

You don't need it in the first place. Use ffdshow or VLC.

Good point. However a number of freeware apps that are very good install
spyware. Take a look at the first items on my list and see how I deal with
that ;-)
