MS Backup won't restore
Hi,
I am trying to restore some files backed up to the C drive on another machine via my LAN, but Restore says that the file contains unrecognised data and cannot be used. Both machines are running XP SP2 and were when the files were made. I have tried this on sevreal different bakup files with the same result. Any help would be appreciated. Thans |

It is possible that the file is corrupt in which case there is nothing that
I know of that can fix the problem. However you might try downloading a 30 day trialware version of Backup MyPC , which is what the XP Backup utility is based on, and see if it will open your file. -- Harry Ohrn MS MVP [Shell\User] "Trevmo" wrote in message ... Thanks for fast response. This programme seems to be looking for "qic" backup
files wich I believe MS used not later than Win98 ish. Xp MS Backup uses "bkf" extension so no go. Hmm it appears that Stomp has changed the name of Backup MyPC (which it was
formerly called) to PC Backup http://www.stompsoft.com/pc-backup/pc-backup.html Anyway it should open both qic and bkf files. You might want to try the demo from there instead. or Here are a couple of apps that claim to repair bkf files. I just found the links today so can attest to the function but this might be helpful in your case http://www.topshareware.com/Advanced...load-37864.htm or http://www.sharewareconnection.com/b...ile-repair.htm -- Harry Ohrn MS MVP [Shell\User] "Trevmo" wrote in message ... Have you tried copying the .bkf from the networked host's C: drive to YOUR hard drive? Try to open the file locally on your host. It is possible the .bkf file is corrupted. You should NEVER do a backup without the "verification" option also enabled. This will double the time to create the backup: once to write the file and a second pass to verify the .bkf file can be read and its contents (i.e., the files within) match up with the original files. There is no point is taking the time to save a backup if you don't test that you can actually USE that backup. Same goes when you create drive/partition images: do the verify step. -- __________________________________________________ Post replies to the newsgroup. Share with others. Hi, yes I have tried moving the file, but no good. I take your point about
verification though. Thanks for your help. "Vanguard" wrote: "Trevmo" wrote in message ...
