using a different mouse with the optical desktop elite keyboard?

I have a compaq computer (running windows xp home edition). On this
computer, I have a standard HP keyboard and mouse. In the near future, I am
looking to add the wirelss optical desktop elite keyboard and mouse.
However, I really don't like the mouse that comes with this setup, instead I
would like to use the wireless laser mouse 6000.

So my question to the experts here, can I use a diferent mouse with the
wireless elite keyboard? The reason I like this keyboard is the scroll wheel
that is included (I have not seen another keyboard that had this feature).

You "could" use a different mouse that the one included in the wireless
desktop (keyboard/mouse) kit. However, you "may" need to connect the 6000
mouse's USB receiver also and there is a possibility that both USB receivers
could interfere which each other.

mouse's USB receiver also and there is a possibility that both USB receivers

It might be possible to put the mouse on one channel, and the keyboard
on a different one, using the Wireless Optical Desktop Elite receiver.

if your wireless mouse is a normal Microsoft wireless optical mouse
(USB), it will work with a Microsoft Wireless Desktop Pro (USB) kit,
with the Microsoft Keyboard/Mouse drivers installed (you will be able
to configure the Microsoft mouse of your choice using the latest
Microsoft keyboard/mice drivers). Don't know about the Wireless Laser
Mice, however. I can't remember if that particular mouse is an option
in the list of mice.

Hold it: I just looked. The Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 is listed in
the list of Microsoft Mice in the latest driver software (5.5). But
whether that mouse/keyboard combo will work is another story.

As an example: I can use my Microsoft Wireless Desktop Pro (USB)
keyboard with a wired USB mouse, or with the Wireless Intellimouse
Explorer 2.0 which came with the Desktop set (or apparently, any
number of other Microsoft Mice).

You might run into problems "crossing" manufacturers, however.

I advise you to download the latest Microsoft mouse/keyboard software
(5.5) and install it. Cost nothing, and trying the mouse/keyboard
combo costs nothing but a little time (and hardware, of course).
