unexpected shutdown

Can anyone help with the problem of unexpected shutdowns in my laptop? this
happened when i try to write DVDs of movies of .DAT format(i have not tried
with any other format) with my Nero 7 Premium. the shutdown happens when the
process of transcoding is in progress. i tried several time in different ways
but nothing worked and finally i was not able to write even the video cds of
the same above format due to the problem of unexpected shutdown. recently
when i tried to run a virus scan with Windows Live also my machine got
shutdown after a scanning of 16%. please suggest me with a better solutions.
i'm using WinXp Pro sp2.

Don't know what's causing your problem but thought I would mention that
this is something that is time consuming, processor intense and will drain
the battery. Best to do this kind of work when not running on battery. Low
battery = forced hibernation.

Power management can have a different view of when there's activity than we
do. May want to try switching to "Always On" whenever doing one of these
projects to see if that helps.

Heat could also be a factor - some systems shutdown when temps reach a
certain level to protect the system hardware from heat damage. Make sure
the laptop is positioned for optimal airflow. If you suspect heat may be a
factor, may want to obtain a laptop "cooler pad."

Also, take a look in Event Viewer to see if there are any notices or error
information that relate to the unexpected shutdowns. Start Run
eventvwr.msc Look under both the application and the system branches.
Focus on the events whose date/time stamps coincide with the problem
shutdowns.
