It's an update for Windows Defender, the anti-virus which you have
installed on your Windows 8 installation. A definition update simply
means that it detects a larger number of malware.

Did Microsoft say that program is junk ?

Why would they?

It is only needed if you are still using Windows Defender as your
anti-virus software. I am using McAfee LiveSafe so I don't need it.

It may have included a program update along with the definition update.
Can't say for certain, but I have seen that with other AV products.

It's normal for definitions to be that big.

Kaspersky is probably up around 100MB for definitions.

And the Windows Defender, if you're downloading defs
regularly, the incremental file in that case is around 1-2MB or so.
That's what I saw here, the last time I had Win8 U1 running.

It's probably an install that doesn't have recent defs, you
end up getting the whole thing in one download.

Is there anywhere one can see the size of an update? It's not on the update
history screen, nor in Control Panel Programs and Features View
installed updates.

If Automatic updating is configured to notify (before download and
install) the individual updates show the size on the Windows Update
'Select the updates you want to install' dialog box.

Thereafter one would have to navigate to the update in the online
download center to see the size.
- Note: File size is always greater in the download center (than shown
in Windows Update) since each downloadable application contains
installer bits overhead to facilitate separate installation.
