Default Explorer Problem

Currently running 7. The file Explorer is displaying a Program Files
dirrectory, BUT also an exact duplicate Program Files dirrectory. In
the 1st, sub dirrectories can be accessed as usual. In the 2nd, I get
the error that any particular sub dirrectories can not be found.
Attempts to delete the 2nd or anything in it fail. This 2nd bogus
entry doesn't seem to be causing any particular problems but would
like to eliminate it. I've confirmed that ther is actually only one
copy of everything on the HD. Informed comments / advice most welcome
and thanks.

Next step: learning how to quote, so people know what you're responding
to and what you're talking about.

As a show of good faith, you could post this in

alt.windows7.general

where it belongs.

I've never heard of such a problem.

Dealing with it, probably isn't going to be all that
difficult. *But*, I'd want to make damn sure I wasn't
deleting the wrong thing.

An x64 OS has two program folders.

Program Files
Program Files (x86)

and I hope you're not confusing those two.

You should have all the File Explorer visibility items turned
on, Extensions, System Files, Hidden Files, so you can see what
you're doing.

You should do properties on the thing, to determine whether
it's a folder or a junction point or something else.

I wouldn't take a hammer to it just yet.

And you can use CHKDSK on it.

As an example of a way to run CHKDSK interactively, on C: ,
you can boot the installer DVD and run the Command Prompt it's
got, to do your CHKDSK run.

If you need to delete something, that's also a good environment
for tricky stuff. The Command Prompt from the DVD. For non-C:
volumes, you have more choices of approach and tools.

I had posted it there.

I have these sub folders, but was mever sure what the x86 was for.
Please explain.

Will try this ...

32 and 64 bit programs interface with the operating system differently.

Well yeah, but I've got both varieties of apps in the just plain
Program Files.

You sure about that? The program's installer decides where to put it,
did you override the choice?

I overide the choice if it's Program Files (x86). Quite often
actually. Also moved essentially every app from there to just plain
Program Files which now has 53 and only 2 left in Program Files (x86).
Everything works fine.

That being said, I've long suspected it makes no real difference, since
the program has to include the correct API.

Yes ...
