What is a good free 64-bit Windows 7 startup program software outdated Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel v2.8?
Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel doesn't seem to show everything like
msconfig.exe, but I don't like that program since it makes me reboot, show duplicates that get readded, etc. Also, it needs to be free. -- Quote of the Week: "I grew up in airports and on air bases. I know what flying and airports can be. And most airports make me feel like we're about three per cent better than ants. Especially U.S. airports. They're zoos. SysInternals (acquired by Microsoft) AutoRuns https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/autoruns It lists a hell of a lot more startup locations than either msconfig or Lin's utility. Some are rather obtuse to most users, like LogonEvents (programs loaded when you log into a Windows account). It also includes Task Scheduler events which can be configured to run on startup or login. |

Then stick with msconfig.exe which shows the typical startup locations in its Startup tab. |

This one seems to be very similar to Mike Lin's program: https://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTAB...-Starter.shtml Pretty old. Last published at Softpedia back on July 31, 2012 (over 6 years ago). The author's website doesn't exist anymore ("The Page You've Requested Is From A Site That Has Been Permanently Removed"), so I couldn't find out if this tool supported 64-bit Windows which was why Lin's tool become obsolete. Per the screenshots, this tool is just as limited as Lin's tool in not showing all the startup locations, just the common or easy ones. No WinLogon Events, no task scheduler, no startup or shutdown scripts per account, no shell extensions, no drivers, no boot execute, ... not much. SysInternals AutoRuns is not installed, just extracted from a .zip file, so it qualifies as portable, and it supports 64-bit Windows and lists all the startup methods. |

Don't know if it supports Win7 x64, but it works well in Win10 x64 (for what it does). I know how simple it is compared to Autoruns, but that's what the OP was asking for. And it isn't an installation; just unzip the files to wherever you want and run it. It's six files, and a Data folder, which looks like it's mostly a bunch of language files. I agree, it is very limited, but that's what some users like :-) Me, not so much . . . I'll stick with Autoruns. -- SC Tom |

It's your choice. Changes you make using msconfig, Lin's tool, AutoRuns, or whatever tweaker you like have no effect in the current Windows session. You already loaded Windows and already logged in, so all those startup locations already got used but have no effect while you are logged in. After all, they are all *startup* locations. You can obviously kill any process currently running that was a startup program (unless it protects itself - but if it has decent self-protection then it won't let you delete its startup item or it will reinstate it). A reboot is only needed if you have no clue how to kill the startup programs already started and instead use a reboot to remove them (because their startup item got disabled/removed). https://www.bleepstatic.com/tutorial...fig-reboot.jpg You can exit msconfig (after making changes) without a reboot. Nothing you edit has an immediate effect. Those are *startup* locations. You reboot to effect the changes you made in msconfig, but by the time you can run msconfig then the startup programs have already loaded. You're using msconfig to affect whenever you *next* load Windows and login. You can do that now or later. |
