What Windows 10 default files contain lots of useful icons forshortcuts to be set to?

That was quick! There are a dozen colors to choose from. There are another dozen additional icons. I tried both color and additional icons, but it is one or the other, which is OK (it was just a test). What I really want is the letter A, or B, or C (and so on) inside the folder. Foldermarker has a section for "user icons" where the default location is C:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll I would presume if I can make my own icons, it will use them. That means the trick is learning how to make custom icons. Once the custom icons are made this foldermarker tool makes it very easy to point and click to change the icons of any folder. My copy has a set called ABC which has all the letters and numbers fro 0 to 9 on a plain folder, It came with the program when I installed it. It was the Pro version which I bought after trying the free one. Rene |

said: IrfanView will do it. Just pick an image of the right size, open in IV, save as ICO. In the save options put a check mark to save the transparant color. IV will then let you click a pixel to pick it. In the past icons were generally 32px square. Now I think there are 48x48 and 256x256, at least. I don't use any of those so I haven't kept up. It may also be possible to use a PNG directly, but I'm also not sure about that. I just tried this and failed but maybe because the size is wrong? 001 Obtain an arbitrary image of any size 002 I chose this one https://i.imgur.com/sk2SYH6.png 003 Open in IrfanView & save as an ICO checking "Save Transparent Color" 004 Save that file as C:\Users\user\Desktop\sk2SYH6.ico 005 IrfanView says it's "256 x 256 Pixels (1:1)" 006 In Windows Explorer, navigate to C: so you can see C:\Users 007 Rightclick on "C:\Users" & select "Properties" 008 In the "Users Properties" form, select the "Customize" tab 009 Under "Folder pictures" click "Choose File..." & select "sk2SYH6.ico" 010 Press OK That fails. This fails also. 006 In Windows Explorer, navigate to C: so you can see C:\Users 007 Rightclick on "C:\Users" & select "Properties" 008 In the "Users Properties" form, select the "Customize" tab 009 Under "Folder icons" click "Change Icon..." & select "sk2SYH6.ico" 010 Press OK That fails. First question: What's the difference between "Folder pictures" & "Folder icons" anyway? Next question: Does size matter? Assuming size matters, I tried a smaller size. 001 Obtain an arbitrary image of any size 002 I chose this one https://i.imgur.com/sk2SYH6.png 003 Open in IrfanView & change the size to 32x32 pixels 004 Save with transparency checked as C:\Users\user\Desktop\sk2SYH6.ico 005 IrfanView says it's "32 x 32 Pixels (1:1)" 006 In Windows Explorer, navigate to C: so you can see C:\Users 007 Rightclick on "C:\Users" & select "Properties" 008 In the "Users Properties" form, select the "Customize" tab 009 Under "Folder icons" click "Change Icon..." & select "sk2SYH6.ico" 010 Press OK That fails. |

| | I just tried this and failed but maybe because the size is wrong? What size is being displayed? You can't ask Windows to resize the icon. You need to know what size is currently in use. What if you pick a system icon? Does that work? If not then the problem may be that you're just not allowed to change that icon. I just tried it with my own icon on XP, but that may be different from win10. In general, Windows has allowed less customizing with each version. But assuming you want to change a folder icon, and that there's a customizing tab showing that option, it should produce a "hidden" desktop.ini file with something like the following: [.ShellClassInfo] IconFile=C:\Users\user\Desktop\sk2SYH6.ico IconIndex=0 (Again, that's on XP. I assume it's still the same but I don't have 10 and haven't bothered to try changing icons on Win7.) |

I personally use a vector program, CorelDraw to design icons. Export to png. Use old version of IcoFx to convert to ICO and format multiple resolutions. Then with IcoFx's resource editor add ICO to personal library DLLs. For folders in Explorer right-click Properties Customize Change Icon ... and select icon from DLL. -- Take care, Jonathan ------------------- LITTLE WORKS STUDIO http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com |

Neither is saving the edited image as an ICO. Nor is saving that ICO at any particular pixel dimensions. The trick is figuring out how to put the image into a "library" of icons. Hence, that "add ICO to personal library DLLs" step you mentioned must be the trick then. Looking up IcoFx, version 3.2.1 seems to be 30-day trialware located here https://www.icofx.ro/downloads.html https://www.icofx.ro/files/icofxsetup.exe 001 I downloaded https://i.imgur.com/sk2SYH6.png 002 I saved as C:\Users\user\Desktop\sk2SYH6.png 003 I started IcoFX version 3.2.1 30-day trialware 004 I opened the png & selected "Create a Windows icon from the image" 005 I then saved it to C:\Users\user\Desktop\gitfolder.ico 006 ? how do you now put this ico into a new dll called myicon.dll ? The question is how to do what you wrote, which was "Then with IcoFx's resource editor add ICO to personal library DLLs." 006 I tried "File Save" but that failed (there is no "dll" option) 007 I tried "File Extract" with the dll option, but that failed 008 I checked every single menu but didn't see the trick Then I went to the help pages bearing in mind that all I want to do is save it into a new DLL called "myicon.dll". https://icofx.ro/tutorials3/index.html This seems to be the closest match to the task of creating a DLL. Create an icon library https://icofx.ro/tutorials3/tut5.html IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Add, C:\Users\user\Desktop\gitfolder.ico IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\myicon.icl IcoFX:Tools, File, Exit Note that there is no option to save as a DLL. You can only save as an ICL. That's OK. As long as an ICL works, I don't care what it's called (do I?). I was easily able to set the icon of a shortcut to that one icon. Shortcut: Properties, Change Icon, %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\gitfolder.ico, (select the one icon), OK, OK To add a second icon to the "ICO" library, I picked this file arbitrarily https://www.tenforums.com/geek/gars/...sic_folder.png The file name was too long so I renamed it %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\music.png I also downloaded a third icon, as three is usually a good number for tests https://winaero.com/blog/wp-content/.../01/before.png And renamed it %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\lock.png Back in IcoFX, I added those two icons to the myicon.icl library. IcoFX:File, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.png Create a Windows icon from the image IcoFX:File, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.ico IcoFX:File, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.png Create a Windows icon from the image IcoFX:File, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.ico IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\myicon.icl IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Add, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.ico IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Add, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.ico IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\myicon.icl IcoFX:Tools, File, Exit I was easily able to set the icon of a shortcut to one of those three icons. The easy way to do it is go to the toolbar and click icon-create windows icon. This will by default make a whole series of images of different sizes and qualities in one ico file. Check or uncheck any sizes you don't want. But once okay'ed it will create the full ico file and you just save and name it. That's the simple way. There's 1000 other things you can do. Library on the toolbar is for making DLL files. |

To add a second & third icon to an "ICO" library, I picked these files https://www.tenforums.com/geek/gars/...sic_folder.png https://winaero.com/blog/wp-content/.../01/before.png I saved "thumb_usic_folder.png" as C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.png I saved "before.png" as C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.png Back in IcoFX, I added those two icons to the myicon.icl library. 001 I started IcoFX version 3.2.1 30-day trialware 002 IcoFX:File, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.png Create a Windows icon from the image 003 IcoFX:File, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.ico 004 IcoFX:File, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.png Create a Windows icon from the image 005 IcoFX:File, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.ico 006 IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\myicon.icl 007 IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Add, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.ico 008 IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Add, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.ico 009 IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\myicon.icl 010 IcoFX:Tools, File, Exit I was able to set the icon of a shortcut to one of those 3 icons. In GFIE you do File-new library. Then you add ico files. Once done you save it as either icl or dll. I will warn you. GFIE will sort icons by name in a library. Kind of a bug in my opinion. As started elsewhere when you pick an icon out of a dll you use MYIMAGE.DLL,20 for the 20th image. Well if GFIE resorts your libary when you add a new icon, then #20 may not be #20 any more. So when I make a new dll I number all the ico files like 01_box.ico 02_fire.ico 03_girl.ico etc. Then when I add them to the dll they sort by the # and stay that way. The next ico I add will be 04_???.ico etc. If you put 100 icons in a folder you can just all all at one time to a new library. Do File-Save and pick in the drill down type icl,dll and make sure you put the .dll on the end of your filename. |

IcoFX:File, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.png Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Create a Windows icon from the image IcoFX:File, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.ico IcoFX:File, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.png Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* Create a Windows icon from the image IcoFX:File, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.ico IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Open, C:\Users\user\Desktop\myicon.icl IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Add, C:\Users\user\Desktop\music.ico IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Add, C:\Users\user\Desktop\lock.ico IcoFX:Tools, Icon Resource Editor, Save, C:\Users\user\Desktop\myicon.icl IcoFX:Tools, File, Exit I was easily able to set the icon of a shortcut to one of those three icons. Shortcut: Properties, Change Icon, %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\gitfolder.ico, (select any of the three icons), OK, OK This works where the only remaining question is whether freeware exists to perform the conversion of the ico file to a icl (or dll) file? -- Take care, Jonathan ------------------- LITTLE WORKS STUDIO http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com |
