That's the question in the Subject.

Does XP Pro Serve NTP?

That's the question in the Subject. Yes, it sure is. I believe you can manually set up other computers on your LAN to sync with your XP Pro box as a time server, although I've never tried this (I generally work with domains) - net time /setsntp:computername or ip What happens if you try that? That said, presuming all computers on your network have Internet access, why not just make sure they all sync to the same public time server? What's your goal? Also, have you seen KB 314054 ? |

That's the question in the Subject. I Googled for "XP Pro as NTP server?" and got several interesting links. Here is one that seems to have the answers you seek: http://snipurl.com/bvpr Malke -- MS-MVP Windows User/Shell Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic" |

I believe you can manually set up other computers on your LAN to sync with your XP Pro box as a time server, although I've never tried this (I generally work with domains) - I'm trying to do that. It's not working. So far it looks like XP doesn't serve NTP. It may offer some NTP version that is not compatible with the machine that's trying to contact it. Dare I say what kind of machine it is? xuniL. net time /setsntp:computername or ip I just became familiar with net time this moring. A query with it reports something like windows.time.com, 0x1. 0x1 is a bit weird. What happens if you try that? That said, presuming all computers on your network have Internet access, why not just make sure they all sync to the same public time server? What's your goal? Now there's a leading question. :-) I'll be brief. The XP machine is the only machine on my local network that has access to the internet, via a modem, 30k baud--on good days. Also, have you seen KB 314054 ? I have no idea what KB is? I suspect the answer lies in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314054. Oh, that's funny. I see that's your KB reference. Didn't connect above. I've not tried it yet because of some readability issues, and the need to backup the registry. Registry back up is solved. Print is way too small to read, or was. Bridged that. Printed page gets truncated on the right making it difficult AND dangerous to use. I will brave it though. -- Wayne T. Modifying the Registry for NTP Access--Doesn't Look Right
This http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314054 shows steps to
modify the registry to use NTP as an external source. Step 3 asks that SpecialPolInterval be changed to TimeInSeconds. The current value is binary. I have a limited knowledge of the use of regedit, but this looks wrong. BTW, before attempting to modify the registry I exported it. I made a mistake early, and decided to import the file. It looks like it did this successfully, but gave me a message at the end that said something like it could not restore all values because they were in use. Close to that wording. What's that about. I had no windows open. -- Wayne T. Watson (Watson Adventures, Prop., Nevada City, CA) (121.015 Deg. W, 39.262 Deg.
