It's very popular. Hard to prove the "negative", though.

Hi

I've been using AVG Free Edition for years - it hasn't let any 'nasties' =
through yet. It also comes with free updates, which is very helpful.

Up to about 6 months ago, I would have recommended steering well clear
of it as it just wasn't effective enough. More recently, Grisoft seem to
have got their act together & now score 100% with no false positives:
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archiv...ts.xml?avg.xml
Some folk used to say it was worth precisely what you paid for it,
possibly no longer the case. IMO, any AV s/w needs a bit more to
recommend it than users stating that it has always been effective (no or
very few false positives is also important).

I'd suggest that you set the schedule for updates to something other than
their default with is either 7 or 14 days, I believe.

Will,
On one Yahoo site that I subscribe to, it was stated that AVG brought out a
later edition (not free, but auto updates)to the older free version. It was
said the auto updates for the free version ceased, and the user had to go to
the download site of AVG to manually update.

So you may not have the protection you think you have had, for the last few
months at least.
I recommend to AVG users that they visit the site, and check that they are
fully updated.

2 questions: If you're so confident in AVG, why do you
have it checking your *outgoing* e-mail? And I have NAV
and have never had an infection, but I also have a grey
cat. How can I tell for sure that it's NAV and not the
grey cat that's protecting me?

I don't personally use A.V.G., I passed it in good faith.
