I'm not entirely an expert with WinTen but if you drop the game into some folder like: C:\ToolBox\Games\MS\SpiderSolitaire and create your own desktop icon from the *.exe file would WinTen still run it over when updating? My thinking is that that sort of directory is a *user* folder not a *system* one so surely even MS's inimical malware OS shouldn't touch it. It would be like any other *user* installed programme such as IrfanView or Thunderbird emailer, no business of the OS. Yes? J. GrtArtiste |

I'm not entirely an expert with WinTen but if you drop the game into some folder like: C:\ToolBox\Games\MS\SpiderSolitaire and create your own desktop icon from the *.exe file would WinTen still run it over when updating? I created a new folder, which I called SpiderSolitaire on a drive remote from the OS (it is on my drive 'H' which is on a separate HDD). The file referred to in my tinyURL is a zip file with 5 EXE files and one DLL file. I just unpacked the zip file to the SpiderSolitaire folder and we are ready to go. The executable files a freecell.exe mshearts.exe sol.exe spider.exe winmine.exe You can create a shortcut to each or any of the above executables or just to the install directory - in which case you will be shown a list of all the executables They will all appear in a list from which you can then make your selection. All games use the same cards.dll file. Your comments below are correct but I would install the programs on a separate HDD - NOT Drive 'C'. WinTEN also creates a couple of additional partitions on the same HDD as your C drive. My thinking is that that sort of directory is a *user* folder not a *system* one so surely even MS's inimical malware OS shouldn't touch it. GrtArtiste Some of these games have been edited with a hex editor, as there is some sort of means Microsoft has for recognizing in-box content from older OSes. So at least for these, a byte or two was flipped on them. https://windows.gadgethacks.com/how-...-free-0166605/ Some stuff from WinXP runs on Win10 without a problem, like maybe the calc.exe would. Microsoft also blocks VPC2007 and Windows Virtual PC. Also, when the version of Windows 10 changes, sometimes those ZIP files, you need a different set of edits to the hex. If the two people doing these edits were more forthcoming about what kind of filter this is, I'd be able to tell you what to look for. Like, some hacks of this nature, involve turning a branch into a NOP, effectively neutering some check the executable makes. Whether it's that, or AppLocker is involved, I don't really know, as no "hints" were dropped about the nature of the hack. Paul |

WinTEN also creates a couple of additional partitions on the same HDD as your C drive. One of the many "one of the first things I did" when I got my Last Ever PC (Win-7) was to partition the HDD into a C and a D drive and to begin to store *my* stuff on the D. Some installers don't offer a choice, they still dump into "C:\Program Files" or its x86 friend but given the choice, I like to put my stuff on D. External drives I use for huge stuff, like video files and music. My thinking is that that sort of directory is a *user* folder not a *system* one so surely even MS's inimical malware OS shouldn't touch it. So at least for these, a byte or two was flipped on them. https://windows.gadgethacks.com/how-...-free-0166605/ Thank you. Site bookmarked but I loath the WinTen screen. It's grotesque. Some of the Readers' Comments are interesting. Some stuff from WinXP runs on Win10 without a problem, like maybe the calc.exe would. It *all* should even if it must be in a shielded, secure sandboxxy sub-machine inside the main WinTen OPS. "Security" is a ****-poor excuse for blocking nice, useful stuff. Whether it's that, or AppLocker is involved, I don't really know, as no "hints" were dropped about the nature of the hack. Okay, thank you. One does wonder why MS *bothers*. I mean, who *cares* whether I have 8-bit DOSsy programs from Win-3 running on my boxes? It's *my* box, not theirs. It's doing them no bloody harm. Still, I suppose that's life in C21. There's not a lot we can do about it and obviously I don't think like an accountant or lawyer so I'll probably never understand. J. Paul |
