pointers for a good password cracker for win 10
I just got a call from a relative who has managed to forget his Win10
password. In the past I used crackers such as Trinity Rescue Kit to address this kind of problem, as it's not the first time that a relative has called about this. (It's not even the first time that this particular relative has lost his password, and I'm beginning to become annoyed.) It is the first time that a Win10 system was involved, though. Will TRK work with Win10? If not, does anyone have any suggestions for something which will work? Yes, the last time I created a rescue USB stick. However, that was for his old Win7 machine and he's lost it anyway. |

AlAfter you get the password reset using one of the methods Big Al suggested make sure to create a new administrative account on the PC with a password YOU will remember. That way next time all you have to do is log into "your" account and go into users and change the other accounts password. Much easier and faster to fix things that way. I use this for my relatives that keep forgetting the password... |

So do you, especially since I cannot find any prior posts by your nym. Nymshifters are also trolls. This is not a warez, cracking, pirating, or hacking newsgroup. There are newsgroups for those nefarious activities. No one here knows if your story is true. Take out all the backstory and your post condenses to: I want to break into a Win10 computer. Will TRK work? The rest just sounds a lot like a sob story in a 419 Nigerian scam: instead of money, you are pleading for a hacking tip. |

However, that was for his old Win7 machine and he's lost it anyway. You can flatten passwords. Or, you can "crack" passwords. The complexity of each, is quite different. ******* Cracking passwords, is when you want to lock out the dude who owns the account. You can then change his password, and he has to do something about it. To crack a Windows password, first you have to get the two halves of where the encrypted password is stored, into the correct format. Then, there is likely to be a tool on Kali for it. You can also use Rainbow Tables on something like the WinXP one. I never did get a chance to test out the recipe I found for that kind of cracking. Now, I have a video card that might be useful for brute forcing. (Might only take three or four days). People who do this for a living, keep eight video cards in a box, to do it. ******* If you're working in coordination with the owner of the machine, then "flattening" the password is the thing to do. The owner can then create a password afterwards, that he or she can remember. And this is pretty easy, because Windows has a couple of exploits, where you replace "osk.exe" with "cmd.exe", and the Command Prompt window that pops up, runs as root. From there, you can do any password resets you need to do. OK, this one uses "utilman.exe", but there's another one that replaces OSK.exe to get in... https://www.howtogeek.com/222262/how...in-windows-10/ The idea is, if a person has physical access to the machine, and as long as the file system isn't buggered too bad where the files to move/link aren't too heavily protected (Microsoft has been making a royal mess of NTFS...), then you can pull off one of the two available hacks, and "instantly run as administrator". You can try this to see who you are, when Command Prompt appears. whoami /user /priv I would recommend this latter option. While it would have been fun to get my new video card, to crack a password, I just never seem to get around to running it. The design intent in Windows, is "never to lose access to effective Administrator". That's why they leave holes in it, so there are "fewer tech support phone calls". It's not an accident that it works this way. Although the mess they're making of NTFS, is making it harder to do these from Linux (a Windows emergency boot CD or installer DVD might be an alternative for moving or copying). If you have content you don't want to share with others, *encrypt*. Accounts mean diddly on these systems. Actually cracking the password, that's a test of your ability to follow a recipe "with a few more steps". Cracking is when you don't want people to know you've been there, or your diabolical plan is to change the password and lock the goof out. Paul |
