3rd-Party FTP Server?
I tried setting up Windows 7's, but no luck... can't even see the
service. So I went to FileZilla where I am in the process of getting my pasty white butt kicked. The Question: Can anybody recommend another FTP server - something that even a total idiot can set up ? -- Pete Cresswell |

Filezilla server, is my hands down choice. I was able to set it up with much difficulty, so obviously it can be done by an idiot. What challenges are you encountering with FZS? Correction, should read: "without much difficulty" I liked it better the first time :-) -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

I tried setting up Windows 7's, but no luck... can't even see the service. Did you include the FTP service when you did the Win7 install? Now that Win7 is already installed and since FTP was not included in a custom install, you'll have to add it yourself. - Control Panel - Programs - Programs and Features - "Turn Windows features on or off" (left panel) - Expand "Internet Information Services" node in the tree list. - Decide what parts of the FTP features you want. However, before you install the MS FTP *service*, first decide if that is what you want versus an FTP client. So I went to FileZilla where I am in the process of getting my pasty white butt kicked. That's an FTP client, *NOT* and FTP server. Above you asked about the [FTP] *service*. Now you're talking about a client. So which one do you really want? To use the FTP client, just open a command shell (aka cmd.exe) and run "ftp.exe" to use the console-mode FTP client. You'll have to know all the FTP commands to use it. That's why there are many GUI-based FTP clients so users don't need to know the FTP command set. The Question: Can anybody recommend another FTP server - something that even a total idiot can set up ? First you better identify if you are looking for an FTP server or an FTP client. Sorry, even with a GUI for an FTP client, FTP is not for total idiots. If you can't figure out FileZilla, you won't be able to figure out the other GUI FTP clients, either. And a console-mode ftp.exe will be way beyond you. And operating an FTP server, if that's what you really meant is way beyond what idiots can administer, especially regarding security when operating one on your intranet and having to secure that host since outside penetration is needed to reach that FTP server. |

(the client is so easy to use - it must be server he's talking about eh). And he mentioned server in the Sujb. Also, I'd never recommend MS's FTP server. The users are/have to be, Windows users. It's (therefore) a horrible thing to setup, security wise. FileZilla Server has it's own (FTP) users - and so security is contained, to FileZilla FTP Server anyway. -- Duncan. |

This is like saying "I have Comodo". Comodo WHAT? So readers without details have to guess what product he got from the Filezilla company, and the most used product of theirs in their GUI FTP client. "FileZilla" without further qualification means "FileZilla Client". You must add "Server", as in "FileZilla Server", if that is the *product* you want to discuss. Softpedia.com: "FileZilla" (client): 281,161 downloads "FileZilla Server": 53,121 downloads (19% of the client downloads) Download.com: "FileZilla" (client): 3,660,471 downloads "FileZilla Server": 129,031 downloads (3.5% of the client downloads) Not to hard to see which product is referenced by just "FileZilla". If someone mentioned "Microsoft Windows", I doubt anyone would think the speaker was mentioning the Microsoft HQ's glass windows on a building. Read the other responses. I'm not the only one to whom it is unclear as to what FTP program the OP is looking for. Assuming the OP is trialing FileZilla Server, it that whips his butt then I can't see another being any better for him. He should probably ask specific questions on how to use FileZilla Server in their forums: https://forum.filezilla-project.org/ Another place to find tutorials is at YouTube, like: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=filezilla server |

The Question: Can anybody recommend another FTP server - something that even a total idiot can set up ? FTP Server Lite. You can get it from a lot of sources, I get it he http://www.snapfiles.com/get/quickeasyftpserver.html IIRC it may have a installer, but I backup the entire application and just reload it, so it must act like a portable app. I have port forwarding on the firewall and it works great. I just have to check my external IP and send that to the person on the other end. |

Per Stormin' Norman:
What challenges are you encountering with FZS? It seems like I am doing everything right: - Router's port forwarding - Windows Firewall exceptions for FileAilla Server.exe, Ports 21, 99, 5000-5100 (99 is because I tried changing the default listening port) But ftpTest says "No Way Jose'".... but in two flavors: - Firewall Up: "Error: Connection attempt timed out". - Firewall Down: "Error: Could not connect to server: Connection refused" But if you say FileZilla is the one, I think I will keep trying.... I was just trolling for something simpler... but it seems to me like the situation is inherently non-simple. -- Pete Cresswell |

Have you tried, as a test, completely disabling the firewall to see if that makes a difference? Have you tried accessing the FTP server from your local network (another machine behind the router)? Have you setup users with authentication in the FTP server? Are you testing access to the FTP server with the proper credentials? Try connecting 192.168.x.x or whatever you local IP is. Bypass the firewall and see if it works in-house. |

3rd-Party FTP Server?
Per Stormin' Norman:
Have you tried, as a test, completely disabling the firewall to see if that makes a difference? Have you tried accessing the FTP server from your local network (another machine behind the router)? Yes on both - assuming that clicking the 2 "Turn off WIndows Firewall (not recommended)" buttons in the Windows FireWall UI is sufficient to actually turn it off 100% and that my IE syntax is correct: :99 makes IE throw "This page can't be displayed." Firefox throws "Unable to connect"... which is a *little* friendlier IMHO. Have you setup users with authentication in the FTP server? Are you testing access to the FTP server with the proper credentials? I *think* so. Viz: http://tinyurl.com/p49lhtd But it seems pretty clear that I am doing *something* wrong... and my gut says it's something really, really basic - as in totally misunderstanding something. -- Pete Cresswell |
