Default Can't get out of safe mode

I have XP and I got into safe mode by msconfig and set it to /safemode.
While being in safemode I type msconfig into the run slot to change it
back to normal mode and it says Windows can't find it. When I reboot
it says I have the option of system restore or safemode but I can't use
system restore because I had it shut down. I feel like I'm in a
catch22. lol Is there any other way I can get out of safemode? I'm
not very puter literate but I can follow instructions if there are any.

Hopefully I'm not just stuck there forever....

double check to be sure you typed it right...
if you had msconfig ...it should not disappear just by going into safe
mode...
do a drive search if necessary to see if it's there.

if not, you should be able to extract it from your cd

Why is it that people who need it the most (neophyts) shut down system
restore. Bet you wish about now that you didn't find out how to do it!

Thank you for your reply... yep I checked the spelling umpteen times.
On a search I get 8 files with msconfig in them. I don't know what to
do in them if I open them though. I don't have any backup cd's for
that puter other than for the additional programs that came with it.

if all else fails

here is what you should do:

enable viewing hidden files and system files in windows explorer

then look in your boot.ini file (root directory)

then see if your default OS has the switch after it : /SAFEBOOT

if so...remove it and save

NOTE: any errors here and your machine won't boot up

so here is what you need to do to be on the safe side:

before you edit your boot.ini

format a floppy from your machine (not a win98 machine)
then copy boot.ini ntldr and ntdetect.com to it

then boot off the floppy and be sure you can boot up to your operating
system

now edit the copy of boot.ini on your floppy

and again boot up with it...and if all is well, copy boot.in from your
floppy to the harddrive
(overwriting) the one there

Hi,

Type instead:

C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig

Then click ok, does this work?

Option 1:
Do start-run-c:\boot.ini[enter]

If that does work then do
start-run-notepad c:\boot.init[enter}

Find and delete the /safeboot switch. Do not alter anything else.

Option 2:
WinKey-Pause *or* right click My Computer and select properties *or*
start-run-sysdm.cpl[enter]
Go to the advanced tab, hit the settings button in the "Startup and
Recovery" box, hit the edit button at the top. Again, find and delete *just*
the /safeboot switch and do not alter anything else.

Thank you both for your help! I tried the pchealth addy and it still
came up "windows can't find". What I did finally get though is from
the search (deeper search) on msconfig.exe a file just named msconfig
and folder name C:\windows\$NTServicePackUn.. I opened that and it was
the Utility. Yeah! Finally! So I finally got out of safe mode...

In normal mode typing msconfig in the run still comes up "windows can't
find" though....

Go to StartRun and type in the Open window:

sfc /scannow

Don't forget the space after sfc.

Hi,

See if there is one under:

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

If so, copy it to C:\Windows\system32

Hi,

Right click the msconfig.exe file in that folder, select copy.

Open Windows Explorer to:

C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries

Then click edit/paste.

Or, click start/run and type cmd, then click ok. Type:

copy C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\msconfig.exe
C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\

and hit enter
