Default cd burning issue

Hi all

winxp pro SP3
Loadsa ram
dual core
**2 X lite on dvdrw LH-20A 1H**

I went to burn a cdr for audio cd using wmp9 and got an error message;

"Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc
is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or
try a different brand of blank discs."

So I complied with that but to no avail. So i tried burning an audio cd
within i-tunes, and that failed aswell as Nero. I tried my CD/R discs on
another PC without a problem so next I installed WMP 11, but still the same.
Then after more googling I installed aspi files and checked with an aspi
checker and they were installed properly and no probs were reported, I also
loaded the latest firmware for the 2 optical drives but still the same
issue.

Now my heads totally batterd and I can't seem to find an answer. I can't see
it being an issue with the cdr's or the media programs so that just leaves
me believing something on my system is corrupted, or settings may be wrong
somewhere.

Please somebody put me out of my misery. also I changed dma to pio then back
and also tried burning at slower speeds and stopping uneeded services.

Is error correction enabled on your drive properties in media player options?
If yes are you sure you have the software supplied with your drive
(standard). If yes your drive might now be faulty take it to a computer
technician let him test the drive and stop worrying yourself with so much
other twang!

Failure on both drives would be unusual.. check in the drives properties
there should be a Recording tab and a check mark on "Enable CD Recording on
this drive". If no tab is available, check the fix in Kelly's Korner

Default cd burning issue

Update

Error correction (PJG's post) wasn't checked so tried that, but to no avail.
Tried kelly's Korner link...No joy.
I've been juggling "Enable CD Recording on this drive" on both drives just
to make sure one wasn't faulty.
Flashed Bios.
Updated Nvidia chipset.
Uninstalled both optical drives and let windows load em back.
Uninstalled I-tunes Ver 8 (Trying anything)
Changed from DMA to PIO and back.
Made sure IMAPI (or was it ATAPI?) runs automatically in services.
Googled intensly and found others with same issue different drives and
systems but no real fix.
Insatalled logitechs ASPI layer ( early Version, as stated "More stable")
and checked with ASPI checker.
Changed WMP from 9 to 11.
Removed KB929399 (read somewhere gave probs) no joy re- installed fix.

Don't really want to get into opening up and checking cables & power
supplies if possible due to unlikely
event of both drives failing simultaneously.
I can burn/read dvd data on both drives, read on both CD drives but not burn
CD data.
But still none the wiser.

I don't know what else I can try...Anything I've missed?

Default cd burning issue

I had a DVD/CD burner that would burn DVDs, read CDS and DVDS but would not
burn CDs. Research showed there are two different lasers for DVD burners, one
for CDS and one for DVD.

Can you burn a DVD?

If so, both drives may be faulty.

You can burn data onto CDs using them both, correct? (Data is data.)

It sounds like you cannot create an audio CD on either, correct? Have
you tried creating a DVD (that is, a DVD that will play on a DVD
player)?

Have you checked Event Viewer for any error reports?

I've never used WMP, so I can't help you there. How about using
CDBurnerXP (a superior program IMO)? If you still have a problem, you
can post in their forum:

http://cdburnerxp.se/

Also, how large is your hard drive and how much free space does it have?

Were you *ever* able to create audio CDs on this PC? What is the make
and model?

How is your harddrive on available space?

Have you made any virtual memory changes? (50% over RAM for minimum and
300% for maximum)

Have you tried uninstalling the Secondary IDE Channel, the restarting?
Right click My Computer\Manage\Device Manager\right click ID Channel,
Uninstall

The IDE Digital cable, is it an 80 strand?

What UDMA mode is it running on... five, six?

Sorry but this is all I can think of... the problem seems very uncommon and
since it affects both drives on the same function, I can't help but suspect
it is related to power wiring or supply or bad digital wiring.. a bad IDE
digital cable would affect both drives on the same functions, low
power would also come up short when it came to burning, so you may have to
open the box as last hope.

Correct

You can burn data onto CDs using them both, correct? (Data is data.)

If you mean on the fly (from one disc to another disc both cd & dvd
formats) then yes.
If you meant make an audio or data cd from the HDD to either of the
optical drives, then no.

It sounds like you cannot create an audio CD on either, correct? Have you
tried creating a DVD (that is, a DVD that will play on a DVD player)?

Have you checked Event Viewer for any error reports?

I've never used WMP, so I can't help you there. How about using CDBurnerXP
(a superior program IMO)? If you still have a problem, you can post in

Also, how large is your hard drive and how much free space does it have?

Were you *ever* able to create audio CDs on this PC? What is the make and
model?

Default cd burning issue

Try this:

Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Click Device Manager. Does
anything look suspicious in the right pane?

I can burn/read dvd data on both drives, read on both CD drives but
not burn CD data.

Please clarify.

These are both DVD drives, correct? (both are LH-20A1H, correct?)

Have you tried creating a DVD (that is, a DVD that will play on a
DVD player)? Have you checked Event Viewer for any error reports?

Device manager reports no problems, both driveds are enabled and reporting
no errors.
I've just done a "sfc /scannow" but also no joy.
