To my knowledge, 8.1.1 will always show as 8.1.

If you type in "ver" at the command prompt, my 8.1.U1 shows:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]

This other machine only has Windows 8.0 (current with updates) and ver
reports:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]

That's an upgrade over Win 7 Pro OEM

Huh? No, that machine never had Windows 7 on it. This machine here did
though [Version 6.3.9600]. That other machine [Version 6.2.9200] did
have XP on it, but it was wiped before Windows 8 was installed.

I also have two Dell Latitude Slate Tablets. One with 7SP1 and one with
8.0. That 8.0 one, Windows 7SP1 was wiped before the Windows 8 install.

Windows 7SP1 [Version 6.1.7601]
Windows 8.0 [Version 6.2.9200]

To do the 8.1 to 8.1U1, you need a set of files.
And they can be downloaded separately.
That's how I got them.

See the "Install instructions" here for details.

(make sure KB2919442 is installed, then...)

Sorry to butt in ....

- why is KB2919442 not offered as standard Windows update? I se it was
released 10-March-2014. (I recently did the 'Patch Tuesday' update, and
my Windows OS version is still showing as 8.1)

Correction: I see KB2919442 was installed on 15/03/2014. KB2919355 was
installed on 30/04/2014. All the others on the list have not been
offered (hence not installed). My OS version still shows 8.1 (not
8.1.1)? Puzzled.

Thats Microsoft. When you upgrade 8.1 the verson number does not
change. It is 8.1 before the upgrade and 8.1 after the upgrade.

The comedians at Microsoft offer this sage advice. They use regular
methods to determine it is 8.0 or 8.1. Then, when they want you
to check for Update 1, they have you look for a search button
next to your account name.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...erating-system

"If you see a search button next to your account picture in the
upper-right corner, you are running Windows 8.1 Update"

If and when Update 2 comes out, I guess we will have some other
"test" to carry out, to figure out the version.

You would think the fourth number of the release
info (effectively a build number), would contain
the info. And that's something they ferret out here.

http://superuser.com/questions/74212...om-windows-8-1

6.3.9600.17031

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" | findstr BuildLabEx

and if the number is larger than 17031 the users have the Update 1 installed.

I think the 9600 is indicative of the Service Pack number,
while the number on the end is the build.

Default Windows 8.1.1 update

Hi, Paul.

Why go through all those steps?

I just use the same key-combo I've been using since at least WinXP:
Win+Pause/Break

The System Info screen pops up in my face and there, right in the middle, is
a line that says:
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Since my computer is an ordinary desktop machine (home-built), the next line
says:
Pen and Touch: No Pen or Touch Input is available for this Display

Some modern keyboards try hard (it seems) to HIDE the Pause/Break key, and
I've spent several minutes looking for one in the store, but it's almost
certain to be there. Actually, it's the Break function that I'm looking
for - the ancient CtrlC (or 03h) code from DOS days or even before. But
most modern keyboards either label the key "Pause/Break" or (like mine) put
one of the labels on it and we have to press the Function key to toggle the
other use - and if you don't realize that, you can press "Pause" all day and
never get the "Break" result.

But it STILL doesn't show 8.1.1 or 8.1 Update or any other such indication.
Just 8.1. :{

Ver in the Command Prompt window shows Version 6.3.9600. WinKey followed
by Ver makes you go a few more steps before confirming 64-bit and 8.1 Pro
with Media Center. :(

I finally got it straighten out. I downloaded the 64 bit package and
installed it. It said it was already installed. And the Ver is
6.3.9600. And it so happens I got 12 updates today. But it was the
first updates I've gotten since 6/13. One thing I don't have though is

Default Windows 8.1.1 update

Hi, RC
Yes, the edition in System only changes from 8.0 to 8.1 and retains
whatever flavor (e.g. Pro or Pro with Media Center) existed prior to the
update.

Which, possibly in MSFT terms, means 8.1 or the mandatory 8.1 update are
not Service Packs.

Separately, I don't recall if there ever was final clarification on the
ability to reuse that free Media Center product key (supposedly
activation required prior to Jan. 31 2013) if one had to reinstall 8.0.
Nor the later possibility - clean install 8.1 then use that free or
even a post Jan. 31 2013 Windows 8.0 era purchased Media Center key
after a clean install using 8.1 full version media.

FWIW, my computer is as up-to-date with Windows (64-bit) as I can get,
including KB2967917, just this morning and KB2919355 (4/8/14) and
KB2919442 (3/13/14) and hundreds of others. The "Windows edition"
display in System never mentions "update"; just says "Windows 8.1 Pro

Thanks for the answer Paul. I have the files, down loaded them from

You got that when you went to the Store to update to 8.1? If so, I will
see that from time to time. In my case, Microsoft's Store is having
problems. If you try again later the problem is gone.

8.1 is the latest version. Microsoft has never referenced the mandatory

The media and folks have referred to the mandatory 8.1 update supposedly
for clarity purposes (but incorrectly) with a variety of terminology:
8.1 Update 1
8.1.1
- neither of the above two actually exist

In MSFT terminolgy it is just (and always has been) 8.1 Update or KB2919355

I asked this earlier today
" Is KB2919355 installed too ?"

If it was that was a clue that the latest 8.1 update was already
installed (i.e. note it is the exact same one Paul recommended that you
download manually and install.

Glad to hear you got July's updates. Installing KB2919355 was necessary
to receive updates for Windows 8.1 after June 10, 2013.

- why is KB2919442 not offered as standard Windows update? I se it was
released 10-March-2014. (I recently did the 'Patch Tuesday' update, and
my Windows OS version is still showing as 8.1)

Correction: I see KB2919442 was installed on 15/03/2014. KB2919355 was
installed on 30/04/2014. All the others on the list have not been
offered (hence not installed). My OS version still shows 8.1 (not
8.1.1)? Puzzled.

Thats Microsoft. When you upgrade 8.1 the verson number does not
change. It is 8.1 before the upgrade and 8.1 after the upgrade.

The comedians at Microsoft offer this sage advice. They use regular
methods to determine it is 8.0 or 8.1. Then, when they want you
to check for Update 1, they have you look for a search button
next to your account name.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...erating-system

"If you see a search button next to your account picture in the
upper-right corner, you are running Windows 8.1 Update"

If and when Update 2 comes out, I guess we will have some other
"test" to carry out, to figure out the version.

You would think the fourth number of the release
info (effectively a build number), would contain
the info. And that's something they ferret out here.

http://superuser.com/questions/74212...om-windows-8-1

6.3.9600.17031

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" | findstr
BuildLabEx

and if the number is larger than 17031 the users have the Update 1
installed.

I think the 9600 is indicative of the Service Pack number,
while the number on the end is the build.

I think it may be the other way around; 9600 is the Build number, and the
"17085" (on mine) is the SP or Update level. If you do a WINVER from a
command prompt, you'll see it listed as "Version 6.3 (Build 9600)". Since my
last number is 17031, I have to assume I'm fully updated (for what THAT'S
worth).

According to AIDA64 OS Version is 6.3.9600.17041.
I don't know why this difference in the last two digits.

According to DISM:
C:\WINDOWS\system32dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031
Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031
The component store is repairable.
The operation completed successfully.

BuildLabEx: 9600.17085.x86fre.winblue_gdr.140330-1035

Three different numbers: 17041, 17031, 17085.

Also there is a button next to my account picture.

This is all screwed up on my machine too. I get 17041 from the
registry and 17031 from dism.

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" | findstr
BuildLabEx
BuildLabEx REG_SZ 9600.17041.amd64fre.winblue_gdr.140305-1710

%windir%\system32\Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031

DISM once again and the component store corruption was repaired:

C:\WINDOWS\system32Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031
Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031
[==========================100.0%================== ========]
The restore operation completed successfully. The component store
corruption was
repaired.
The operation completed successfully.
