Default DVD Ripper to MPG or WMV

wrote:
Hi,

I have some home videos that are on DVD, that were originally on VHS
tape. Note: I still have the VHS tape.

A few or more years ago, I paid for Amigo DVD Ripper V2.8 (shareware)
which worked fine for creating a smaller size display MPG videos from a DVD.

I tried DVDx4.0 ripper, but the MPG video will not play using MS Media
Player on my Wife's WinXP laptop. It does play on my Win7 laptop (Media
Player).

Can you recommend a DVD ripper that creates a MPG or WMV that will
play on an older version of Media Player?

Thank You in advance, John

Find the VOB files. Copy them from the DVD to the hard drive.
Use something like VLC to play them. VLC even has a "Convert"
option, but I don't know what it does for me.

A commercial DVD would have the normal protections.

Whereas the home-made DVD is more or less just a "data disc". And you
should be able to do what you like with it, with minimal tool-age.
No "ripper of commercial content" needed. Because the home made
DVD is not encrypted.

Any Video Converter (free version) easily does this if the dvd is not
copy protected. If it is, then first use DVDShrink to strip to copy
protection from it.

Start AVC, browse to the Video_TS folder on the dvd and drag the
pertinent vob files to the AVC window. Note vob files are in a sequence,
the filenames indicating which sequence. Each sequence is a separate
"title". You likely only have the one sequence on a "home made" from vhs
dvd. Also note - the "0" vob file is not used.

Look for the sequence that the first file ("1") is 1Gb in size. Usually
there a few with the last being whatever remainder is left.

Once you have them in AVC arrange them in order then highlight all of
them, right click and choose Merge.

Start conversion after selecting what format and where you want the
output file.

Took way more effort to write this than do it (except maybe first time).
It's my 1st choice way of ripping dvds or for changing any video files
format. I've not found anything does a better job or easier to use.

That said, it chokes on the odd mkv file which forces me to use other
tools sometimes.

Hi Paul,

I copied the VOB files (from DVD) to the HD and used VLC to convert them
to MP4. Note: A 608KB VOB file became a 286KB MP4 file. I installed
VLC on my Wife's laptop so she can view these larger display home videos.

Again Thank You and "pip" for your replies, John
