Random lock up
I'm using WindowsXP SP2 with all pertinent patches applied (except SP3, of
course). Over the last two weeks my computer has started randomly locking up. The symptoms include: 1. Upon returning to the computer after an extended period of time, all I see is the desktop background image. The mouse works, but there are no icons, and keyboard shortcuts (Windows key, ctrl-alt-delete, etc) have no effect. 2. Occasionally, while working, the system will freeze. The mouse still works but will not activate or allow me to interact with any of the visible windows. Ctrl-alt-delete will bring up the usual dialog, but pressing any button results in full lockup other than the mouse. I have run a full virus scan (Eset Nod32) and spyware scan (Counterspy), with nothing found. I also ran the full suite of Dell diagnostics from the command line with no hardware problems detected. I have recreated the page file in case it was corrupted. I have also run sigverif, but came back with 33 out of 331 unsigned files in system32\drivers. I haven't directly updated any drivers in quite a long time, so I'm questioning whether these unsigned drivers are significant to my problem. Any other suggestions as to further troubleshooting? thanks, Bob M.. |

Random lock up
I had the same problem. the computer would lock up or reset at random. Virus scans with NOD32 showed nothing. A couple times I noticed a window at the bottom right of the screen pasted there by NOD32. I thought it was a notice of a virus but it was not. On further investigation I determined it was the NOD32 drivers fouling up the system. I uninstalled NOD32 and reinstalled it (good thing I kept the name &password) Everything has been fine for the last week. No lock-ups and no blue screens. NOD32 was the problem.. -- jabusse ------------------------------------------------------------------------ jabusse's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=51175 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=979299 http://forums.techarena.in |
