Firefox 25 crashes on XP
I was at a WIFI spot last night using my Lenovo T43 laptop with XP
(SP3). I have been using FF 18, for at least a year and had no problems. But I'm really sick and tired of Youtube flooding my screen with their goddamn nag screens saying "your browser is no longer supported", so I thought I'd upgrade. (But not to their latest, because Ive heard too many bad things about it). I installed FF 25. Went to youtube and found this newer version still did not satisfy youtube and there were MORE nag screens (in every page). Immediately I was not happy. After using it more, I found a lot of other things that annoyed me, for example, it no longer told me the length of my current download time left. Some functions were changed and seemed stupidly placed. And there were these annoying things that popped up whenever a download began or ended, and other stuff. There was not even ONE improvement. But I told myself I'd get used to it. Then it crashed, and damn near locked up my whole computer. First it said "flashplayer was having problems and to shut it down". I did that. Then it would drag and I'd have to wait several minutes before I could even open or change tabs. I rebooted the computer and started again. It was not long before this all happened again. Particularly on Ebay. I know Ebay likes to drag down my FF 3.x on my Win98 computer, but this was even worse, and I only had 4 or 5 ebay tabs open. I finally had to reboot again, and when I restarted, I ran the FF 18 installer, getting rid of FF 25 and going back to what I had been using. But my problems did not stop there. Now my install of FF 18 was running slow and causing the computer to seize up for a minute or more almost on every tab. This time I uninstalled FF completely. Then I installed FF 18 again. Now everything is working fine again. In my opinion, FF 25 is a piece of crap. It offers nothing on improvements, and appears to use a lot more resources to make it run so slow. Who needs it? I sure dont! And while I'm getting things off my chest, Youtube can shove their %^&*+ nags screens up their ass! I just hate the way these websites BLAME THE USER for not having a compatible browser, when in fact they should BLAME THEMSELVES for not producing a website that can be used on all platforms. After all, not only are there multiple browsers and multiple operating systems, and some are older because of older hardware and/or an older OS, but there are now the mobile sites as well. Maybe if they dumped all the bloat and worthless scripts, and useless gizmos and so on, they could actually make a website everyone could use! Until then, anyone know of a good "Youtube Nag Blocker"? |

Firefox 25 crashes on XP
Go to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[nonsense folder name]\ Create a file named user.js, if it's not already present. Add these lines. (Watch for wordwrap.) user_pref("general.useragent.enable_overrides", true); user_pref("general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0"); Now you'll be seen as Win7 with FF 35. Next, go to downloadhelper.net and install the DH extension. Now when you go to youtube you don't even have to enable script or have Flash. Just click the DH icon and download the video. No waiting and no needing to return every time you want to see the video. |

But I'm really sick and tired of Youtube flooding my screen with their goddamn nag screens saying "your browser is no longer supported", so I thought I'd upgrade. While the User Agent (UA) string is not an accurate means of detecting what web browser and version is connected to a web site, and use of the UA string is on its way out to be replaced by a web site testing what functions the client can perform, some sites still use the UA string to determine the web browser client. I don't use the UApick add-on for Internet Explorer () but there should be similar extensions for Firefox. An online search should find those, like: http://www.bing.com/search?q=firefox user agent By the way, the Firefox support newsgroup is over at: NNTP server: news.mozilla.org, port 119 Newsgroup: mozilla.support.firefox You never mentioned which service pack level of Windows XP that you have. If you are not at SP-2 then see: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...ons-windows-xp I installed FF 25. Went to youtube and found this newer version still did not satisfy youtube and there were MORE nag screens (in every page). Firefox is currently at major version 37. That's 12 versions away from the version 25 that you installed. With the rapid updates for both Firefox and Google Chrome, that doesn't necessarily mean version 25 is that old. You didn't mention the subversion of 25 that you installed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_release_history That shows the release history for Firefox. Looks like 25.0 was released back in November 2013, or 16 months ago. Doesn't seem really old but there may be functions in later versions of Firefox upon which the Youtube site relies. If you can view their videos with audio and change the size of the viewer window and switch to different video modes then your version of Firefox has all the functions needed and Google is just bitching because they have other content that requires more functionality from Firefox - which you don't need to just watch their video content. To check what UA string you are sending to the site, go visit: http://useragentstring.com/ Could be you already have a UA extensions that is modifying what UA string is sent in your headers so it is reporting an old version despite getting a later version of Firefox. The UA string includes a substring identifying the operating system on which the web browser is running. Could be Youtube (Google) is only nuisancing Windows XP users. Then it crashed, and damn near locked up my whole computer. Did you uninstall all add-ons and uninstall Firefox to then do a clean install of only Firefox? Actually that probably won't do a clean uninstall. The uninstaller will probably leave behind a Firefox profile folder, a program folder, and lots of registry entries. You would have to do an uninstall of each add-on, do registry and file cleanup, uninstall Firefox, do registry and file cleanup, and then do a clean install of Firefox. If you don't want to mess with the registry, use a 3rd party uninstaller, like Revo Uninstall or Geek Uninstaller. Those will clean up the registry enough but will still leave some remnants (they don't dig too deep because some matching entries may not be for Firefox itself but some other program, like to list program compatibilities). First it said "flashplayer was having problems and to shut it down". I did that. Then it would drag and I'd have to wait several minutes before I could even open or change tabs. Did you run Firefox 25 with *ALL* add-ons disabled by loading Firefox in its safe mode? Looks like you carried along old versions of add-ons that are not compatibility with later versions of Firefox. Loading Firefox in its safe mode (which does NOT load add-ons) and retesting would show if the problems were due to add-ons. But my problems did not stop there. Now my install of FF 18 was running slow and causing the computer to seize up for a minute or more almost on every tab. Dirty install. You'll have to uninstall, cleanup, and then install an old version. This time I uninstalled FF completely. Then I installed FF 18 again. Now everything is working fine again. See. In my opinion, FF 25 is a piece of crap. Could be. In my opinion (despite I don't use Firefox) is you have a problem with add-on incompatibilities. snipped whines directed at the wrong audience Until then, anyone know of a good "Youtube Nag Blocker"? Not me. Sorry. See above on why your trial of Firefox 25 might've failed. Or ask in the proper newsgroup about Firefox (see above). |

Ok, I can do that! (Is there not supposed to be any wordwrap?) Next, go to downloadhelper.net and install the DH extension. Now when you go to youtube you don't even have to enable script or have Flash. Just click the DH icon and download the video. No waiting and no needing to return every time you want to see the video. Download helper is one of my most used programs. It's the main reason I use Firefox, (since it's made for FF). Otherwise I'd be more inclined to use Seamonkey. When I go to a WIFI spot, I download all the videos I want, and usually find more that look interesting. Then I go home, and watch them on my laptop, or usually transfer them to my Win98 machine where I can watch them on my big monitor. I save all the ones I like, and delete the junk. I filled up both of my harddrives (about 240G), so I finally moved most of those videos to a USB portable drive. The majority of the videos I have are "How to" types, related to farming, horse training, and machinery and computer repair. But I have a lot of the old TV shows from the 50's thru 70's like Bonanza, Green Acres, Rifleman, etc, and old movies, all of which are on YT. And luckily I saved a lot of the music videos from those same years, before YT blocked the download of music videos. I also have a lot of documentaries. Anyhow, I have thousands of videos saved, and I can watch them anytime without even being online. If it was not for download helper, I only be able to watch them once at the WIFI spot, and would probably have frozen myself, sitting in my car in winter. I do most of my WIFI stuff from my car, because the fast food restaurants dont have a place to plug in my computer, and the battery is old and dont last long. In the car, I use an inverter, but have to make sure I dont run the car battery dead, which I have done a few times, prior to buying a new car battery. Seems everytime I go to a WIFI spot, I come home with 3G to 10G of videos to watch, so I'm all set for quite a while. |

| Ok, I can do that! (Is there not supposed to be any wordwrap?) Right. Each line is separate, ending with a semi-colon. What I posted is two lines. |

I also think it would be wise to mention that one needs to use a TEXT editor for this (like Notepad, not Wordpad), and not a word processor, to avoid problems. (AFAIK it needs to be pure ASCII). |

Firefox 25 crashes on XP
Boy am I having problems with Firefox? I've tried several latest
versions of it but if I forget and click it off it never comes back on unless I either restrart the machine or reinstall Firefox***. Twice I thought I had solved the problem by disabling add-ons but the problem keeps coming back with a vengeance! Yet I need it as Google will not allow IDM as an extension. I know IDM is not the problem as I have been using it for ages. ***One exception is if I wait long enough and then click the SHORTCUT on the desktop or on the taskbar. Then I can get it up! Or is it firefox's geriatric problem? I mean not being able TO GET IT UP!!! So obviously Firefox is not shutting down properly but remains active in the background even though it does not show up on the Task Manager DURING WHICH TIME IT DRIVES ONE NUTS!!! I am cross-posting this to the Windows 7 group too. -- choro ***** Politics is the art of dealing with the repercussions of yesteryear's policies.-- Quoted from choro's sayings. Either try version 28, or change the User Agent String. Versions 28 and 25 aren't the same, so perhaps version 28 will work for you - it works fine for me over here, and I don't see the YT nag screen. I wouldn't go any higher than 28 for the reasons I've already mentioned several times (hint: Australis sucks!). |
