Do you mean xcopy? I do not see an xxcopy in Windows 7.

It's an add-on or a plug in, or something. Anyway, I foudn the problem
-- it hadn't unzipped properly, so it wasn't in Windows 7, but it is
now and it works. It does things that xcopy should have been able to
do but doesn't.

No, no one can tell you that, because you didn't tell us what you
mean by "not working".

I used to use (the free version of) XXCOPY but got fed up with it. All
too frequently you get nags saying "This version hasn't been tested with
your operating system . . ." requiring manual intervention to get it to
work - or downloading and installing a new version even though the
existing version was ok apart from the nag. Worse still, it won't let
you copy to a network drive without ok'ing a nag - even though the T&Cs
permit this for personal use. This means that you cannot use it for an
automated backup to a network drive.

I now use Robocopy instead. Bit of a learning curve to start with, but
worth it. It does all the same stuff without the annoying restrictions.

Have you looked at robocopy, in Win 7 and later?

XXcopy is not part of any version of Windows. It's a well-known
third-party program.

It was suggested here when I posted a query about a command-line sync
tool. As you say, a bit of a learning curve weeding through the
options, but well worth the effort.

I'm using XXCOPY on my XP machine, whch will no longer be updates, so
there's no likelihood of nag screens.

What is the Robocopy equivalent of the /BN switch in XXCOPY?

I couldn't find one that did that unequivocally, otherwise I would
have used it on my Windows 7 machine, since Robocopy is there already.

Conversion table here.

Robocopy XXCOPY Comments
/XO /BN Exclude older files (backup only newer files)

Although, as with any super-powerful tool, check, check,
and triple-check your syntax. A mistake in mirror mode,
can delete a whole partition. Just like that. (Mirror an
empty partition to a full partition, and watch the full
partition... disappear.) I've had at least one mishap
with Robocopy, that I regret. You can't press control-c
fast enough.

Ah, thanks. I thought it might be that, but being negative it scared
me. I thought that if there was an /XN there must be an /N somewhere,
but there wasn't.

Indeed. There used to be an XDEL command in DR DOS, which worked in
Win 98, but not in later versions. I've just discovered how to do it
with XXCOPY -- delete .BAK and .TMP files from subdirectories. I tried
Glary Utilities and EasyClean, but neither of them did that.

When in any doubt whatever, I use the /L option, which tells Robocopy
to list what it would have done if the /L option weren't there, but
not to do it.

That sounds useful, then I can test it before putting it in my batch
file.

In my case, it was a copy/paste mistake.

The copy buffer had the wrong command in it, as well
as a carriage return. My second attempt to control-C
copy something from my notes file, didn't work. I pasted
into Command Prompt, and the command started running
right away. And it had the wrong drive letter in
the command, so the wrong partition had the command
run against it. Kaboom!

Now, I have a new discipline for copy/paste.

1) Copy a command from the notes file.

2) Go down a couple lines in the note file,
do a "test paste" to verify the copy buffer
really has the right command in it.

3) Paste the command in Command Prompt.

4) As well, when doing (1), make sure you aren't copying
the line termination characters, so the command doesn't
run immediately when pasted. Wiping the text from right
to left before copying, can help here.

It's good to know there is a /L, and I suppose I could
log all the commands with /L added to them, to "de-fuse"
them :-)

When it comes to Robocopy, every command I've ever
executed with it, is in the log file I keep for it.
Which makes it easier for the more successful
recipes, to paste it the next time.

Paul
