Outlook Express (XP Home)Attachments with SP2
Hi
Was wondering if anyone can help. I frequently send out (and recieve) attachments. I am finding graphical (JPEG's etc) are being embedded into the emails and the paper clips are no longer any use to open it or save it. They don't work. I have to right click on the email body where the graphic is and 'Save' it from there. What settings can I safely change to put this feature back to the way it was?? Thanks Di |

Thank You Kath. Have gone to this site and had a read and
also printed it out so I can read it again! ) I don't doubt it is a good feature but it is also a pain when you recieve so many attachments that you would like to save with minimal hassles! Outlook Express (XP Home)Attachments with SP2
Hi Kath
Have read this from the page and it isn't making any sense to me. Can't get a 'Properties' on a message that I can't access the attachment via the paper clip to find a "General Tab' to "Unblock'. I must be looking somewhere in the wrong place. I went directly to the email involved . . . am I meant to look elsewhere? Ok.. I just tried something that works but not what the Knowledge Base article instructed . . .I went to email prog. Then 'Tools' 'Options' then 'Security' and unchecked 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus'. Emails now have the paper clip that when I click on it the attachment is active and I can now open it in my Windows Picture and Fax Viewer like I normally do. I guess this is one of the new features that have come with SP2. It's good but a bit of a pain if you want or need to open it in a viewer! Any comments on my way round this little problem much appreciated . . or any alternatives?? Thanks Di 883260 - Description of how the Attachment Manager works in Windows XP Service Pack 2 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883260 -- Kath Adams MS MVP - Windows (IE/OE) . |

'Tools' 'Options' then 'Security' and unchecked 'Do not allow attachments
to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus'. This setting was set to on as the default in an update before SP1. Either you turned it off a long time ago or you haven't updated in a long time. -- Ron Sommer "Dianne" wrote in message ... Hi Kath Have read this from the page and it isn't making any sense to me. Outlook Express (XP Home)Attachments with SP2
Of course by doing this you have circumvented a new safety feature... This
is fine if you are sure that all attachments are always safe and you know which ones can be opened in the Picture and Fax Viewer without any side issues. Side issues include: virus infesting your system, virus propogating through your system to everyone in your email address book, trojans which can record keystrokes - such as logon and password information to your bank or allow your system to become part of a DOS attack on others world wide. Curbing these side issues is part of the purpose of SP2 - congratulations you have now overcome this safety add on and opened your system to...? FWIW, Len "Dianne" wrote in message ... Outlook Express (XP Home)Attachments with SP2
Thanks Len
Yes I am well aware of why this feature was put into the SP2 pack and I can certainly see the benefits of it. What I discovered with my fiddling is now I have turned this feature back on I can turn it on and off as I require. By this when I have a clean up of my Emails and I want to save items, I can turn this feature off . .do what I need and then turn it back on . . .. I also run Nortons 2004 and updated several times a day, anything that still comes thru that I think are suspect items are deleted immmediately or emails sent asking for verification on ones I have any doubts about or they sit on my computer for up to a week this allowing time for any new definitions to be released for any new virus' but normally what I do is just hit delete. Have firewalls in place, also use online secondary virus scanners etc. All these have added up to the past 8 years of my computer use NEVER been infected (knock on wood this continues but absolutely no plan or feature makes anything fool proof!)...I also teach a lot of people computer so not a novice myself. I agree with what you're saying totally, but I think with appropriate precautions etc and common sense we can utilise the new good features that Microsoft provide but also still be able to work things in a mannner we can happily carry on with our normal! I do appreciate your feed back . .'cos what you say is what ran thru my mind when I discovered this 'manipulation' of mine would work. . . many thanks Di -----Original Message----- Of course by doing this you have circumvented a new safety feature... Sorry Dianne, Have been away a couple of days, but see that Ron has
replied and put you right, and that you managed to figure it out for yourself anyways! With your mentioning SP2 I did not think to try the most obvious solution, especially as you had not posted any error messages. Glad all is well and you are now a happy lady.
